I find myself constantly doing work... I never have a free moment and find that there are not enough hours in the day. Is it normal to have 5 science courses with 5 labs/week ever week? I am used to this by now as i am in my 3rd year but constantly feel overworked. All the courses I am taking require a laboratory slot and it is offered as a course component rather than another "course" as some students here have mentioned. My GPA is not great at all. For each course they say 3-4hours of review, I have 5-10 hour days ever day and I come home and must start my lab write up which are due 2 days after the lab not to mention assignments, essays and online quizes. Is this normal compared to other schools? I am at a Canadian university and I know that my friends are going through this also. How is it like at your university? Where is the social life,,,, where is the time in general. (there, my 5 mins of free time are up LOL)..

I guess they are doing a great job at getting me ready then🙂 Just how can a non-science major get ready for this then? My friends are in Business and other non-science majors and they are able to kick back and relax on weekends and go out every now and then.

work hard. play hard.

get your work done sunday - friday, so that friday - sunday you do whatever it is you like to do outside of school

5 science classes + 5 labs per week doesn't seem normal to me and it doesn't seem like a good strategy for success. Three seems pretty typical with all of the predents/premeds that I know. If you have general ed. credits you need why not pair some of these up with the science classes? A higher GPA will be more valuable than whatever can be gained by taking so many classes at once.

The outline has always been this way.. I am taking
1. Molecular Genetics +lab
2. Organic Chemistry II + lab
3. Population Genetics + lab
4. Bioinformatics + lab
5. Molecular Cell biology + lab

Its just too much and thats why I thought i'd ask around to see if this is normal. My advisor told me that since you are a science major that I will have to go through with this order. (next year looks much better for sure)!!!!

this may be a stupid question, but what is general ed courses?

Jaba,

Only those with suicidal tendencies or a great dislike for him/herself would take the courseload that you are taking (at UCSD anyway, not too sure about Canadian universities). I agree that your courseload will definitely prepare you for the academic side of dental school, but your lack of balance in life will only lead to your eventual downfall in all other aspects of dentistry. Don't forget that as a dentist, you must be competent in the sciences, but your ability to RELATE to people socially is what really brings back your patients. In the end, it is the happiness of your patients that defines your success as a doctor of dental surgery. Go out and live life a little bit, or you will become a drilling, cavity filling machine later on!

Good luck, and hope things turn around for you!

LOL, thnx everyone I am definately going to change a few things next year regardless of what my advisor tells me! Its not like I don't enjoy the courses, its just that I would enjoy them much more if I didn't have to take them all at once....in additon, my GPA might also be about 100% better and I just hope that this mistake so to speak wont kick me in the behind. I am going to be volunteering @ a dental office as well so I dont know how i'm going to pull that one off... would it be the worst thing in the world to drop a course so close to the end of the semester? I wish i had better guidance, nobody other than the nice people here at sdn are telling me what i need to be doing differently... Sucks that there are only 12 dental shools in all of Canada (not to mentiion French, and also province preferencces.).. ok thats my blurb, any comments welcome HAHA.

I didn't think that I was going to be accepted this cycle so I went back to undergrad as a non-degree seeking student (doing post-bacc work). I am feeling your pain buddy..........Advanced Microbiology, Genetics, Biochemistry, and Physiology. I found out that I was accepted to d-school this past weekend.

seriously if i were u i prob. would have offed myself a long time ago. When i was an undergrad i never took that many sci/lab courses at once, i always had other easy general ed courses (like history ect..) mixed in with the harder science courses. U def. need to get out with the ladies and let loose a little, assuming u are a dude. 🙄

Cool, ya sounds tough! What is Post- Bacc? I dont know if my school has this? is it an actual program? Could I just re-take some of those courses that I did horrible in? Should I even consider applying to the USA? if I do get accepted ever, you guys will have to update me on what a freternity is, or all those things I see on movies. LOL sounds fun!?

I seriously got tired just reading that schedule! As for the what are gen ed courses question, they are classes like history, gym, diversity credits, behavior science, or other easy classes that have to be completed to graduate.

Why don't you pick a day and just hit the treez, you'll be feeling all better after...
