I FIRMLY stand by the others who have said that Baylor weeded them out b/c they didn't keep their coursework current. DocToothache, I too agree that it is absolutely ABSURD that a ds would weed out people just b/c they didn't keep taking courses, BUT IT IS TRUE. Get over yourself, and your supposed "expert" knowledge on the subject, b/c you are WRONG here. you might be right 99% of the time, but sir, eat it, you are wrong in this case.

I called Baylor regarding my previous two application attempts and asked specifically why I didn't get an interview invite. (I got invites for SA and UTDB both years but not Baylor) Janet Pledger said quite simply, they trashed my app b/c I didn't keep my courses current. I have two master degrees. MPH completed in 2005, MA completed in 2008 but my last actual grad class taken in spring 2006. I told her that was a ridiculous reason but she said that they didn't want students entering their class cold turkey b/c they think the students who did not have current coursework would be "shocked" by the ds courseload more so that students who entered straight from undergrad or straight from taking at least 3 hrs a semester.

From my BS, MPH, MA, i have 250+ hours. I know. ridiculous. but i started retaking my classes again at Community college b/c i work full time now. i figure, ive taken 250 hrs, whats another 10? plus my employer md anderson is paying for it.

anyways, shout outs to my boys danny289, mantraman, lphiewok and those who remember me from the prev cycles. Good luck! if yall have any Qs, just ask away. i will update yall on my current situation later, as i am sitting the next few cycles out to support my wife, daughter, and soon to be 2nd daughter.
 
As I read this thread, I get more and more scared everyday as I see more and more people report that they get accepted to a dental school. I applied to 9 total and have only had one interview from UTDB Houston with no acceptance notification from them yet. I check my email almost every hour hoping to get something. Does anyone know what are the chances of getting accepted after getting an interview from UTDB Houston?

The title has never been claimed nor is it deserved and all posts remain simply opinions. The veracity of the particular statements by Dr. M/posters has never been in question whereas the rationale for rejection is. It remains to be seen whether or not after retaking courses at a CC the outcome will be any different not only in terms of it's effect on admission but, more importantly, on the presence or absence of the "shock experienced by the ds courseload".

I know UTDB is not going to send out acceptance notifications soon. They are going to send another batch of offers later January/early February so stop checking your email like crazy because that drives you crazy. Out of all the Texas schools, Houston has the smallest class size, only 84 people. Therefore, I remember during my interview they said last year they sent out like 140 offers to fill their seats. The dean also said this was a low amount since typically they send out more. Right now, just concentrate on finals because you just have to play the waiting game. You already had your interview and did your best and that is all you can do!

i believe previous year they filled most of their classes on Dec 1st. What they do is they will create alternate list (you have to make it to this list, it's not automatic for everyone who interviews. btw i didn't make it last year) and they will pull some people off the alternate list. so i don't think this will count as second-round since they filled their classes from first round and filled up some spots from alternate list.


correct me if I'm wrong, but this information is from my conversation with Baylor admissions office lady last year when I was calling once every two weeks to check on my status

This is a great question that I wish I knew the answer to. I pretty much asked Janet in an email and this was her response:

"We usually send our second round of acceptance letters at the end of January and we select applicants for the alternate list in late March."

Now, that to me totally contradicts what I was told by Dr. Miller in my interview which was that they pretty much fill their class with Dec. 1 acceptances. So who freaking knows what to think at this point...

One thing that would be interesting to ask, (which I'm not going to because I think I've bugged them enough) is how many acceptances were sent out on Dec. 1? If someone wants to ask that and come back here with the response, that would be great!

For me, I have come to terms with the fact that I may not get in this cycle and I need to start preparing for next year. All we can do is hope and wait. I'm holding onto hope but certainly not banking on it...
 
for those that are knowledgeable on baylors admissions, what kind of classes are they exactly looking for? more upper level bio, retaking prereqs, labs? thanks

upper level bio, i think i only got an interview at baylor b/c i was a bio major...

yep baylor loves upper division biology classes. when i had my interview i remember seeing a checklist of the different types of biology like cell, anatomy, histology, ect. dr miller suggested that i take a cell biology since i already had most of the other types of biology on the checklist. from that i am assuming they want upper level classes but make sure you vary them. dont take a lot of molecule biology classes for example.

When i interviewed at baylor, they said their goal was to fill their class, or most of it, on dec. 1st. Therefore, the amount of acceptance invitations they sent out was very high.

On the other hand, houston informed us at their interview that their goal is to fill half of their class with the first round in order to leave room for later interviewees. I believe they said that in last cycle they interviewed 240 and offered 140 in order to fill their class.

BTW...I'm choosing Baylor over UTDB

Yeah, slightly higher GPA (4.0 last semester). A drastically improved DAT (17AA to 21AA) and a little more shadowing/volunteering/etc.

The truth is that I've only really leaned towards Baylor because I'm from Dallas. Apart from that, I don't care and I certainly have nothing against moving. I just want to get in somewhere and if that's Houston then I'm there!!

I really liked Dr. Pierpont from UTDB and the downtown medical district, but I just think Baylor is the right fit with me esp cause its in Dallas and I am familar with dallas. I am a close friend that attends there and she really like everything about it. I also felt like I got to know more professors from Baylor at my interview and I liked them all.

You will enjoy UTDB's interview process...its really cool

Yes sir! I was shocked because I know SA likes high gpas and I probably don't fit in with that category. It's on jan 4th so it looks like i'm not going to the national championship game now.

That's not exactly accurate. I was accepted to San Antonio and my GPA isn't great. You should go into your interviews with confidence. Don't worry about the people around you and what their stats are. If you look at it from that standpoint your going to get discouraged because some to most people will probably have better numbers than you. But San Antonio invited you for a reason, so that means you have something to offer that they like! Go in there with a good attitude and they will see that you will be a great addition to the incoming class! 👍

My girlfriend also got an SA interview on the 4th, which she is excited and nervous about. She called Baylor and was told that they are done for this cycle.

woooooooooooooo, alan already heard the news. but i'll be happy to say i'll be meeting longhornpride on jan 4th. did you notice in the email it said 2009. anyways. it was a great surprised, hopefully we will all have more happy surprises coming to us soon🙂.

Since you now have an interview they have gotten decidedly better, but if you are looking for a more authoritative opinion you could try Ms. Cleo.

Also got a baylor rejection email, pre interview. They couldve bothered spell checking it at least..
 
For those of us that have interviews at UTDB on Jan. 11th, do yall think/know whether we will be included in part of the 2nd round of acceptances? Last year it looks like that went out on Jan. 20th...
 
Hey guys! Quick question. I don't know if y'all have all wrapped up the semester yet or not, but I have and I was wondering if any of you without acceptances yet are going to mail an updated transcript to the schools you still have a chance at? I don't know if we're supposed to do that... if it would help at all. I guess it could only help if you aced your courses which I miraculously happened to do (overcame senioritis, chyah! lol).

Ah I guess I'm still just freakin out.

Haha, already have my transcript (waiting for official grades to be posted) ordered to be sent to TMDSAS. That's how I understand we're supposed to do it.
 
I am new to studentdoctor but I have been following y'alls thread and as much as it sucks not getting an acceptance letter dec 1st at least we still have some hope. I have interviewed with UTDB and Baylor and SA is in January. I am waiting for the next round of acceptances...we will see how that goes. I am confused about what to do..should I retake the DAT or as baylor suggests to be enrolled in courses?

Well, you're in better shape then me so I'm not sure how qualified I am to give you advice but if you want to keep Baylor as an option, I'd definitely stay enrolled in some courses. What is your DAT score?

i just had my interview with UTHSCSA this past monday. it was a little intense. but everyone i met was super nice. there was a total of 13 of us being interviewed. i remember someone else getting an interview the same day but for some reason i was under the assumption that person was a girl ,but i never met anyone from UT.

You must have met my girlfriend there then. She mentioned that her first interview went very well - they guy had some tricky questions though. The second person interviewing didn't seem like she was too interested in interviewing. Overall, she thinks she did ok, but not great cause of the second interview. Any idea on when UTHSCSA sends out notifications of acceptance?
