Hmm, let's see. TMDSAS opens in May. You didn't submit till August and then you want them to hurry it up. Baylor moves fast through their apps, Houston is a little slower but they give everyone a good look. Just be patient.

Unsolicited, yet sound advice. 👍

does any of the three dental schools accept people who will not be graduation by time of admittance ? I got interviews in the 3 of the dental school and I have not graduated/will not be gradutating ...what do u guys think?
I am a transfer student from an over-seas dental school and I've taken ALL sorts of higher biology classes.like 80 hours transferred beside my prereqs

A few people got accepted into dental schools without a bachelor, my friend got into San Antonio after finishing her junior year.

So I had my first interview today at UTHSC-SA and for the most part it went pretty well. Being my first I was definitely a little nervous going in but the people there were very nice and very helpful. One thing I will say is know your personal statement very well and have a response for anythign that you put in it. The D3 I interviewed was really laid back but for the first 5-10 minutes he didnt really say much so I really had to get the conversation going, make sure you have some questions to keep it moving forward. After that he focused mainly on a few key items in my PS and that was it nothing to tough. My Faculty interview was with Dr. Segura and that was probably the most relaxing converstation I have ever had. I switched from medical to dental and she seemed to be fixated on that, but I tried to explain that was primarily due to family pressures and after doing alot of shadowing it just wasnt right for me and explored dentistry and loved it. Other things I would make sure you have an answer for is where do you see yourself ten years from now or what area do you see yourself living in.

Another thing that may help so of you guys is the fact that the interviewers dont have access to your GPA or DAT scores and the only thing they have read over is your personal statement so everyone is pretty well on a equal playing field.

Other than that, I thought the school was great and really enjoy attending the school.

Best of luck to everyone!
Robert

I'm not so sure about that! When I interviewed last year, my faculty interviewer didn't have my official grades or scores in front of him but I managed to get a peek at the piece of paper he was looking at and he had made some notes from my application and it had my DAT scores along with other information.

At Baylor, I know for sure they look at your scores and GPA. One of the faculty interviewers, was looking through my file right as he was asking me questions. I even raised some concerns with my "numbers" compared to the other interviewees that day, and he looked at my application and said "Don't worry about it. If you're interviewing here that means you've met the requirements."

Well maybe that was the case last year, I was there yesterday and the whole group was told that the interviewers do not have access to anything other than your personal statement because they did not want grade biased evaluation. Also I am only referring to UTHSCSA, and aware that Baylor is basically an open file interview.

If you look carefully, I was also referring to UTHSC-SA in my first paragraph and talked about Baylor in the second.

UTDB invite for the 11th! 🙂

Congrats TX LONGHORN!
Your stats are similar to mine and I'm hoping to get one from UTDB this week. Baylor got back to me within a day of when my app was transmitted(last week), but nothing from UTDB :-( and its 30 minutes from my house!

Hey guys,

I've never posted here before but I thought I would share my interview invites:

Baylor- October 15th
San Antonio- October 18th
Houston- October 11th

Had my Baylor interview this morning, and it went great! I really enjoyed visiting the school as well as my interviews...all my interviewers (Dr. Ashworth, Dr. McWatters and Dr. Miller) were excellent and extremely nice. It's amazing how much experience the students get...no need to worry about this interview, it's completely relaxed and just conversational. They do have your file open however, so know your application (which you should without having to re-read it)

I'm pretty much giving up hope. At this time last year, I had already interviewed with Baylor. I don't think they are going to give me another interview because I might have sucked. 🙁 I briefly got to meet with Dr. Spears today. I asked him what he thought I should do and he said an master's degree might help. Anyone have any good grad school suggestions?

Be patient IMO You will hear from schools later. 👍

Have you taken any classes since last year? if not, Baylor is notoriously stickler about it- they don't want to see any academic gaps.... Otherwise, on paper your stats looks very good and you should hear from TX schools soon - just hang in there !! .... Last year, I didn't interview until November and got in both places (SA and UTDB)..

Good luck!

🙁

I think that may be the problem. I postponed my graduation for a semester to take some more upper levels and then graduated. So I've been out of school last Spring semester and this semester. I really wish I was in school right now. I am auditing classes but I doubt that really counts for anything. And yeah, your situation makes me feel better. 🙂 I really hope I can get even a January interview. I probably won't get in but if I can get an interview, I think I might feel better about my 3rd cycle.

UTDB invite for the 11th! 🙂

Congrats Tx, I know you were waiting for one!

I am holding out hope for this next month as Baylor doesn't look at OOS'ers until October (per their website).

Good luck at your interview.

hmm I know it's still early and all but I'm starting to get nervous now. Submitted my app in early June and it was transferred to all 3 schools in early July. Only had one interview so far (Sept. 1 at Baylor) but haven't really heard anything from Houston/San Antonio concerning my app. Should I call them to see if they are missing something from me? Or should I just wait it out a little more before pushing the panic button?

no both schools already sent me an email saying they received my app.

san antonio did so in july 29, and houston did so on aug 9. but I think they received earliar since my app was submitted in early june and transferred to the schools in early july?

Be patient and don't hassle them since you know they have your application.

Houston has interviewed 56 of the approximately 280 that they interview each year, so they're only a fifth of the way there. Don't worry people, I interviewed in October last year and got in on December 1st.

I interviewed on Nov 14th at Houston (after submitting application mid-Sept.) the year and was accepted on Dec 1st as well. So, to help solidify your statement, people - don't worry!

anyone know of people whose apps were transmitted very early, i.e. june/july, and hear back about interviews very late, october-dec?

seems like if you don't hear back within a month or two, chances are you won't since the number of apps they're reviewing later increases significantly

At least not until you get the Dear John letter because in the end, there will be about 1100 that had cause for concern.

If you're in the Dallas area, you can look into UTD

I'm not in the Dallas area but I've looked into their programs. Seems like they have some pretty interesting stuff.

Yeah it's not bad. I guess it mainly depends on where you're living. Any program that will allow you to take Anatomy, Histology, Physiology, Micro, Neuroscience, Pharm, or other courses like that would be beneficial.

Is that so Mr. Wahby? I interviewed in Nov and got in Dec 1st as well so don't sweat it.

got an email today, signed up for the 25th

I got to meet with the three dental school deans today. Dr. P and Dr. Spears were awesome as usual. I left Dr. Berrong feeling, one, inadequate in size because he is a tall man, and two, like a huge failure in life. Like my dental aspirations were as meaningless as offering chopsticks to an armless man or as hopeless as Yao Ming staying healthy for an entire season. I felt like I got a kidney punch from Ali and a ‘nad kick from Bruce Lee. His words were vicious…sadistic, like people who take pleasure in intentionally starving and neglecting their Tamagotchi/Gigapet to the point they would be forced to start ingesting their sky-high pile of feces. But they aren't allowed to die. No...just at the brink of death, they are rescued and healed so that the cycle can continue. And so they pray for a death that will never come. Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating just a wittle bit. And the bastards probably deserved it being so darn noisy and high maintenance. Dr. Berrong isn’t super cold hearted. Kind of a nice guy, just very much a realist and perhaps only wanting someone not to put all their eggs in one basket.. None of that -keep on trying and eventually- crap. According to him, some people, no matter how badly they want to be a dentist or improve themselves, will never be cut to and thus should find another option…like pharmacy school or being a ninja or something. Now, this isn’t a slight to SA. It seems San Antonio is a very academically driven school. If your stats suck, try, try, try, and try again...but it won’t help because, according to him, unless you have good stats, everything else in your application is useless because they won’t read it. Is this true? Oh, and I’m just joking Doctor and San Antonio. Take me in. I will love you long time.

dude, after your rant, your love might be like a one-way street 😉

good luck

The unrequited love, eh? I feel like I’m getting friend-zoned hardcore by SA…kinda like Quasimodo was by Esmeralda. You know, the Hunchback version, the real one, where even Quasimodo’s good-heartedness (and I’m very good-hearted person, sometimes) is extremely negated by his fugliness (and by Gob, on surface, my application is ugly), to the point he’s left to die thinking of the girl that was never his(in my case, the hope for dental school which will probably not come for a while). Again San Antonio, I don’t mind the one-sided love. But I’m a desperate and faithless man. If Baylor or Houston come knocking, baby, I’m gone. I’ll never think of you again. But I still love you…well, until someone better comes in.

Dude, you are hilarious. If dental school doesn't work out, you should become a writer for a stand up comedian - unless your delivery is awesome.

Haha. Thanks but I'd crash and burn. Why, if I had dime for every time that I’ve been asked at the end of an interview if I had any questions and responded with “nope, I think I’m good,” well, I would have thirty cent. I almost did that at my Baylor interview with Dr. Miller. She asked if I had any last questions and I initially said no, being the idiotically honest person I am. Having extensively asked the other two interviewers questions and her as well during the session, and also having zealously researched the school beforehand, I couldn’t in good conscious ask questions to which I already knew the answer. Midstatement I was like 😱, so I made the no into a not really in the form of a ‘tarded no-ought (donut...). As in, no-[second passes]-ought really about blah-blah but -completely oddball question- So me, I'm not very funny. My ability to fail can be funny though. 🙁

SA rubbed me the wrong way as well. Hopefully you hear something from the other schools

Yeah, SA has always been my ugly chick option. You want and feel you deserve an 8 or 9 but simultaneously you‘re so desperate that you would gladly settle for the conceited 7 who thinks she might be a supermodel…and even then, she thinks you are butt-ugly so she doesn‘t even want to be friends. And the 9’s (Baylor and Houston) want to be really good friends but not really an item. 🙁
It started out with their average incoming GPA being a 3.8 from a couple of years ago. At that point, I had barely sniffed a 3.0. And the fact that I've never once heard SA described with the words such as family or home. I always hear that about Baylor and Houston. I have however heard one of the deans describe SA as military? I also hear they have nice landscaping. So SA isn't at the top of my list of dream schools...which isn‘t saying much, I have 3. But don't get me wrong, if SA said come to our school, I'd take the chance in a heartbeat like a mentally impaired child who takes candy corn from the man in the stained wifebeater driving the windowless van. 😕

make sure to check out their (SA) labs and classrooms during the interview --- because that is where you will spend most of your time if you end up going there...😉

Nice landscapping, even on an ugly chick, is not a bad thing 😉

Simplicity helps. You never want to get lost. I noticed a lot of them are bare, devoid of any shrubbery, lacking even tiny bushes, leaving only enough for one to imagine what was previously there long ago…we’re speaking of the dental school scenery, right? Houston and Baylor don’t really have any trees, I think? 😉
And yeah Denteeth, I’ll make sure to do that. Haven’t had the chance to tour yet (been to the others twice). So far the best thing I’ve heard about SA, that the other schools don’t have, is their landscaping. 🙁
