I have a 3.6 GPA, my school has pluses and minuses. When I calculated my TMDSAS GPA it got up to a 3.71. Do texas medical schools base their averages and look only at the TMDSAS GPA?

wow this is great news. I really want to go back home and attend medical school in Texas. if I maintain my tmdsas gpa and get around a 35 mcat score ( have not taken physics, so will take mcat spring semester of junior year, do I have a chance of getting into at least one medical school in texas

As long as you have good ECs, then more than likely. Many of the Texas schools (except UTSW) consider factors other than GPA and MCAT score when interviewing and accepting students, so make sure you have an interesting and wide variety of ECs. Also, a 35 is a hard score to get. Anything >30 should be fine as long as your application is strong everywhere else

my EC is not that great, I have research experience, hospital volunteering, head of a volunteering program, head of spanish club, tutoring, and shadowing. I really have just 6 activities so far to list on the amcas.

does utsw look only at gpa and mcat?

no, they look at the whole app as a whole like every other school in texas does, but they do tend to be more selective which is why they have higher average gpa and mcat for people who matriculate there.

My advice would be not to set all your hopes on UTSW until you've had the chance to actually visit/interview and see the school a bit better. It has a pretty distinct culture that is not for everyone, including those with stats that would enable them to go.

UTSW looks at other things only after they interview all their applicants that have guaranteed interviews; those with GPA >3.7 and MCAT >35 (I believe, someone correct if it's wrong). Like eli said, UTSW has a very distinct student population and culture, so don't be set on going there until after you see the school and talk to the students there.

Your ECs really don't seem too bad and it seems you have a decent amount of leadership. Is your hospital volunteering and shadowing extensive or just a one-time/short time span thing? You really should shadow a few different types of doctors to show that you have a good grasp of the medical field.

Also, it is really hard to say if you will definitely get an interview. I know plenty of qualified Texas applicants this year that didn't receive any interviews. Medical school admissions really does have some luck involved. You could get a reviewer who strongly connects with something on your application or you could get a reviewer who doesn't. It really is the luck of the draw. With that said, you just need to make sure your application is as strong as possible.
