Hi Guys! I'm a TX resident and have already applied to all the Texas MD schools. I'm just debating about whether to apply to TCOM (the texas DO school) or not. I have a 3.9 and 507 and pretty great ECs including research, TAing, volunteering, creating a fine arts org, etc... I'm just conflicted as to whether it would be difficult to match into residencies out of state from TCOM as my SO lives in a different state. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks!

Current TCOM student here. Based on what I have seen in our last few matches, it is not uncommon for someone to match out of state for residency. We have people match each year to a variety of places outside of TX in all kinds of specialties. That being said, I think there are still a LOT of students that end up staying in Texas for residency for many reasons. I have not quite started residency applications, but a good majority of the programs that I have been looking at are out of state. I am also not a Texas native, so take that for what it's worth.

Your stats definitely do seem competitive for TCOM, though! I say its worth it to apply!

With a 507, you need to consider TCOM.

The year that I applied, I sent my TMDSAS to all TX schools inculding TCOM, and my AACOMAS only to the LECOMs. Financially, it made more sense to me to retake the MCAT and reapply to Texas schools the following year than to go to a more expensive DO school.

TBH, your stats aren't great for TX MD, and unless your EC's include military or peace corps (or something very similar), don't count on them carrying your application. TCOM is one of the best DO schools in the nation and they put graduates in every residency speciality. The only TX MD school where your MCAT is median is probably UTRGV and they have a preference for those with ties to the valley, which, combined with being a new school is why their median MCAT is where it is. 509+ is the median for all TMDSAS schools and that includes TCOM. When you factor TCOM's scores out the TX median MCAT for MD goes up.
