Ok,
So everyone knows to score well on the boards, and to take Step II early if Step 1 is awful... Honor Medicine (most important clerkship), do research (try to get pub), get a great rec'dation from a PM&R faculty, and do an elective in PM&R...

but asides from all of these "academic" achievements... is there anything else outside of this, that one can do to be more competitive? It seems as though this is all we can do in our limited time schedule.

how about spending some time at a rehab facility (you could easily attend on a weekend morning and spend some time with the PTs/OTs), participate in special olympics programs, visit an orthotist/prosthetist. anything that shows you're interested in and really care about disabled people should definitely be a plus on your app.
