To commute or not to commute...

How far have you commuted or how far will commute before moving closer to campus or a dorm. This can be for undergrad or med school because for me it will be the same distance if accepted in state. Thanks.

I commute 1.5 hrs to school each way (train + subway), five days a week. It's a pain in the ass, but it'll be a cold day in hell before I pay $10,000 for room and board or rent an apartment in Boston.

For undergrad, I commuted from Queens to the Bronx everyday - half of it by public transportation (it took an hour and a half each way). When I finally got a car, it only took 30 minutes, but it involved crossing a bridge. Haha

For med school, I'll be commuting outside of the city to Long Island, another 20-30 minute commute. It all depends on the cost of living away from home and if it's worth that price to you.

Same.. I'll be damned if I have to drive longer then 30 minutes a day. Honestly I live in area where the highways get clogged, so basically a daily 30minute commute can turn into a hour and a half meltdown. Never again.

30 minutes is about my limit, so I didn't vote. I prefer 15 or less. I used to do 40 minutes each way, and I hopefully never will again.

It's not that urban around here so to me anything over 30 minutes is a long drive. I did that through most of college, and I hate, hate, hated it. However, I did it so I could go to college during the day at school A and paramedic school at night at school B. In the end, I overworked myself, got pissed off, and was ready to leave college ASAP. In hindsight, I'd have done it all differently. Then for my first job I also did a half hour commute, but I went north every morning in stead of west.

I hate commuting.

I am a 3rd year med student. I live within a five minute walk from our primary hospital. A long commute would be a nightmare during your 3rd year rotations, especially for rotations like surgery and ob-gyn where you have to come early and leave late.

15min each way is my limit. I've done the commuting thing by car and by train (45min each way on a train that only ran 6times a day and 1.5hours each way with 3 transfers), not doing it anymore.

I commute 37 miles / 45 minutes each way for undergrad. That's about my limit.

I commuted 40 miles each way to school for 4 years (with traffic, it was a 1.5 hour drive) and 65 miles each way to work for 2 years (with traffic, it was a 2.5 hour drive). Pretty sick of it. I think for med school a 30-40 minute commute each way would be my limit.

I guess I'm weird, because I'm loving my 30 minute drive to school three days a week. It's really therapeutic. It gives me a reason to turn my music up and just chill out for a little while.

On the other hand, it does mean I have to wake up earlier, which always sucks.

I did this for college, but will not be doing it for med school. $10,000 for room and board, and you still live with like 3 other people...HELL NO...I saved a whole lot!

Agreed. I live within a 10 min walk of my classes right now and it'll hopefully be that way in med school too. I also hate driving and start complaining about anything longer than a 15 min drive.

I commuted a total of 1 hour and 20 miles a day for my undergrad + 2 years of post bac. I DONT recommend it for medschool. anything more then a 5-10 min drive is bad in my book. I look forward to walking to class... even if I have to pay more rent!
