Does the school have a note transcription service?
If so...How is it run? do certain students take turns? is it reliable? are the notes any good?
Just wondering.

Hi!

We do indeed have a note transcription service available for M1. A fair number of the class uses it, though there are students who are successful without relying on transcriptions. For me, because I don't attend class, transcriptions are my best friends at school. The service had a few problems towards the end of the year, but that is only because of a minor problem with the tape recorders. I'm sure this will be corrected for the next years class. I probably paid in total somewhere around a $100 total for the year for all of my transcriptions. They are generally very good about having the transcriptions online for download off the student portal website within 2 - 3 days of the lecture.

laterz!

Neurotracer is right, and if you have any other questions about EVMS, we will be more than happy to answer for you.

does EVMS stand for "EVil Medical School"? 🙂

Thanks a lot for your responses. I can't wait to start this fall! Oh, and how do I get a locker 😉?

chigirl- show up the week before shcool starts and go to the student affairs office and ask for a lock and then go find an empty locker.
The coop transcription notes are helpful but hopefully your class will have better luck with your tape recorder. the thing woudl bomb out on the lectures i needed the most!! we also should have gotten our money back for lectures not trasncribed. and contrary to what neurotrancer said this happend all year long.

but don't stress out before you begin. there is plenty of work waiting for you. very few people have all of their ducks in a row before classes begin. the first few days of orientation serve that purpose. good luck

Can you all help me out, I have a few more questions....

First, does anyone know of "dog-friendly" rentals in the Ghent area? We have two dogs and we're not having much luck finding a place (you can PM me if you have any leads).

What books do you guys recommend for incoming first years?

Who are the best teachers over the first two years?

MSIVs - Can you recommend some good clinical teachers that would also be good advisors/mentors?

I'd also like to know of some good places to eat in the Ghent?

Thanks for the info. See you soon.

Dog Friendly rentals in Ghent can be tricky. Apartment wise, check out Ghent on the Square 757 640-8400 s and there are a few others. However, weight limits apply as well as breed restrictions. Also, here are a few other links that may be helpful. Your best bet will probably be checking classifieds and property management companies.

http://www.pilotonline.com - this is the local newspaper, you can search for apartments, condos, etc.

http://www.cookeandneff.com/ - a local property management company
757 622-5643

http://www.nancychandler.com/ - property management and real estate company. 757 623-3003

http://scripts.cgispy.com/classifieds.cgi?user=evmshousing

O'Keefe Properties 757 583-3132. I have some friends wiht large dogs that rent from this company.

Meridith Management - 757 622-8233

http://student.evms.edu/ this is our student site, look under postings/virtual market. There are usually many places listed.

2. Books are a matter of preference. Everyone studies diifferently, so its hard to say which ones are the best. Talk to your big sib once they are assigned and he/she will help lead you in the right direction.

Lastly,
good places to eat in Ghent.... Depends on what you want.

No Frill Bar and Grill - Good food!!!, sandwichs pitas, burgers, salad. On Spottswood street.

Cogans - Good pizza joint

DC Chases - Restaurant and Bar. Good Food, opens at 5pm. on 20 th street

Magnolia Steak House - Steaks. Colley avenue

San Antonio Sams - Colley Street - Tex-Mex

Kellys tavern - colley street. Great Burgers!

In regards to books-last year we were given a stat sheet that asked for former M1's opinions on what books worked for them and what didn't. I don't know about this year.

Here is my 2-cents:

Biochem: don't buy stryer, or marks and Marks, go for BRS or High Yield, syllabus is okay but disorganized

Anatomy: you need transcribed notes for Dr. Goode, he's too fast a talker for you to take your own. Baby Moore is pretty good and BRS Anat. netter's is great, if you like to dissect get Grant's Dissector.

Human development: borrow the book from the library and do old tests. The instructionor make a big deal about buying a brand new $100 book that is worthless. I spent too much time reading it, but fortunately I borrowed an older edition so I saved some bucks for food.

MMCB-syllabus and see Biochem

Histology: buy an atlas, brs is good for the main stuff, the text unfortunately is too detailed

Neuroscience: text is a easy read-Young and Young; Duane Haine's atlas is better than watson's the recommended in depth and clarity.

Physiology: BRS, BRS, BRS. and Big Guyton. Big Guyton is just to boring to suffer or sleep through. Go to the ER workshop on EKGs in January.

See what works for you, but reading textbooks especially big ones are time consuming and boring.

KBSO 🙂

Thanks for the all the help. You've been amazingly gracious in your replies. I can't wait to meet this fall.

Lucky9999, those were some good leads. My search had been mostly unfruitful in finding dog-friendly apts. Things are looking better now. I'm hoping to be out there a week or so before school. Are you guys going to be in class by that point?

How much clinical experience did you get in the first year? I know you go through standardized pts. and pt/doctoring classes, but is the longitudinal experience your only real pt. contact? Are there other volunteering opportunities?

Let me know if I ask too many questions. I'm just excited to get underway....

neo

You're clinical experience in LGM will depend upon your preceptor and your asking your physician if you can do this or that. Some of my classmates were "thrown to the wolves" so to speak, where they doctor said here's the chart and go do it. Other especially peds just stood around and observe a lot, how can you interview a 5-12 year old kid. Adolescent peds I heard are much more enjoyable.

Outside clinical experience will depend on your scheduling with classes and exams. There are volunteer clinics, but I haven't heard to many MS1s doing that. Sightsavers, Blood Pressure clinics, are regulars during the year.

Good luck
kbso 🙂

Could you guys give me some advice? I submitted my amcas last month to 7 schools before getting my MCAT's back. EVMS is definitely my top choice and the only place I really want to go, but I applied to more if I didn't get in. After getting my MCAT scores my premed advisor suggested going to talk to the dean of admissions and let him know that EVMS is my top choice and to possibly ask whether I would be too late for early decision or if I could have an earlier interview, since I don't think I can afford the money or time away from classes to attend all these interviews. If I was accepted to EVMS I would immediately w/draw from any other schools. I also shadowed an EVMS faculty member that offered to write me an LOR. Do you think it would be alright to talk to the dean? It sorta sounds a little presumptuous to me, but my pre med advisor recommended it. What do you guys think, is it worth a try? Thanks so much! 🙂

Thank you everyone for your answers, they are very helpful.

Would you mind answering a few more? Thank you in advance.

1--What would you say the top 3 apt complexes/areas are?

2--is there a dress code for class?

3--what is the "Y" gym like? is it free for students?

4--can you print out class notes for free in the library? do you need a computer even if not required (I hope not)?

5--is your class ranked? do you know where you stand at all times?

6--how often are you in class? (I heard, on avg. 25 hrs/wk, which is pretty good). What percent of students skip class? Does it hurt their grades?

7--what's the best thing about EVMS? what's the worst?

8--what's the social life like in Norfolk? How social are the various classes with respect to people within their class and other class years also?

9--Is it only M1's that go on the sept. retreat?

If anyone answers even some of these that would be great. I apologize if I don't reply for a while, I'm going out of town (a non-cyber environ) tonight.

Plus, for all of you upcoming M1's, want to schedule a get together sometime during august before everything starts? I know two other people in our class that would be interested in this.

okay i am going to answer what i can.

2- dresscode. Not for classes but for LGM and ITP guys wear ties and girls dress smart casual to buisnessy and for itp wear a white coat and LGm wear whatever your mentor suggests. my class apparently dresed up too much for itp though but we get graded on our dress.

3- the Y is a decent gym. it is free for students. it has decent hours. what are you looking froin a gy? i'm sure you can find it there.
4- you get 1000 free printouts period. forever. think this soudns like a lot? well dr. goode speaks 12 pages a lecture. i think my 100 pages are gone. then they start charging i think 15 cents a page. 😡
5- don't wanna know my class rank i might get depressed. 🙁 but I'll have ot know 4th year. i passed and right now that's what matters.
6- the schedule is really random. you can be in class 9-3 some days and 9-5 other days. regarding attendance you have to figure out what works for you. for some rteahcers, some classes it is worth it. for others less so. they used to turn out the lights and read from powerpoint and i was out liek a light also. in addition i study better int eh mornings so to me being in class all day and then having to study at ngiht didn't work.
9- everyone can go to the retreat. i didn't go to any and probably missed out on alot.

my book 2 cents:

anatomy- baby moore and the blue boxes in big moore.

histology- buy the book updated version and read it. this is the only book that i read from cover tocover. the professor looks for minute details from the book to test on.

biochem- i thought the syllabus was one fo the more organized ones. the texts were only fro clarification and i liked lippincott for that.

physio- BRS and maybe baby guyton. some people liked big guyton but after the first block the syllabus was really organized and you cna just use that.

neuro- i liked the text for this. the chapters were short and clear and it explained things well. the syllabus is highly unorganized. i used clinical neuroanatomy made ridiculously simple a little. it was comic relief because the author was funny to me. i think iw as going crazy though.

MMCB- syllabus only. this class could be easy.

What did you score on your MCAT? I think you are implying your MCAT scores were lower than you assumed they would be. Thus, you think your chances may improve by EDP.

Sounds as if you are very set on attending EVMS. Personally, I cannot offer you any insight on being able to switch to EDP. Call AMCAS?.you will learn through the application process to be proactive, this is your future so take some initiative. Call Call Call. Call EVMS admissions and just tell them your problem, ask enough people and you will get the answer you seek. Seems as though you could switch to EDP (deadline is Aug. 1), but you would be down the money you have already spent sending out your AMCAS to your seven schools?then if you don?t get EDP you would probably put more money down for your AMCAS to the schools you were originally going to apply to?.do you gamble??.put your money down on the best odds I say, for you to figure out.

According to AMCAS ?You will be eligible for a refund of your AMCAS application fees - - minus a $160 non-refundable service fee - - if you withdraw your application before it has completed the verification process.??.withdraw and reapply?.logistical mess I say?

There are other factors you may want to consider. Applicants apply to many many more schools than you anticipate on applying to (seven). I believe the national average is around 11-12?.go talk to some California applicants and 25+ is not out of the norm. Remember its not easy to get in?3.9, 35+ don?t get in, take nothing for granted?interviews go bad, essays push someone the wrong way?.basically the more schools you apply the less of worry this will be to you?find a way to borrow the money.

Also, what is it about your current situation that is so time limiting that you can?t spend one day in Richmond, DC, Charlottesville as I assume you have applied to these localities. Looking back, once in medical school being burdened and busy as you are now will seem like a joke! Are you still in undergrad?...if so professors are usually very receptive to students missing class for a med. school interview. Let the professors know at the beginning of the semester that there may be a possibility of you missing a class or two. I did this and everything worked out perfectly. I know you may be financially limited at the moment...this will only worsen once in medical school. Don't you agree that the money spent applying is a sound investment vs. the alternative of putting all your eggs in one basket and not getting in! Also think about this, EDP is a binding contract and if you decline to attend EVMS you will have to wait an entire year to apply to a US medical school. In the future attempts to gain acceptance to schools your unethical character will be questioned. Next, say you apply EDP to EVMS and do not get in! Well, on Oct. first you will add your other choices?probably paying the fee you already paid again! Submitting at this date will put you at a disadvantage. I cannot say how strong your application is, if it is not ?superior? I would not go this route. As you can see EDP can save you money but is walking a thin line. Personally, I would not do EDP. My school preferences changed immensely over the application process (just a heads up). Here is what I would do. Keep all 7 schools (a few more maybe too)?. Financially?. borrow some money from a parent, sibling, relative, don?t worry about how busy you may be when interviews come, forget it?you are moving on to bigger and better things and you will make time, trust me you will be happy that you get to go on interviews?these are good things. Also, sounds like you might want to write a letter of intent to EVMS. Address this letter to the Admissions committee in care of the Dean. Basically, it should say something like?.EVMS is my number one choice and if I am accepted I will withdraw my consideration from all other schools and attend. Medical schools want people to go to their school if they accept them?these stats look GOOD for them?though not documented in any book or protocol, such a letter I would venture to say must hold something. Don?t write this letter unless you will attend EVMS?.letters of intent are usually written for individuals who are on waitlists?further down the line?.a little more certain of where they will attend. Very unethical if you don?t fulfill your letter of intent (this is different then a letter of interest?can be sent to multiple schools).

I think it would be nice to start getting to know eachother before school starts, so we can help eachother through this....I mean shoot I am stuck with you all for a few years so I might as well....haha, jk. I am free and in Norfolk anytime from the end of July on.

One more thing.....

I am purchasing a new computer this summer before M1 at EVMS. I would like some advice from current EVMS students. From your experiences in your first year at EVMS did you find it beneficial to own a laptop vs. a regular computer? ?.i.e.?.did it come in handy when studying lectures in the library, or was it just as easy to print these out, or do at home.

thank you for your input!

Dave

Thanks a lot for all the advice! I ended up getting a 32 on the MCAT (higher than I thought I would) and I guess along with that lor thats why premed advisor suggested I talk to the dean if evms was really where i wanted to go. EDP does sound a bit risky when you put it that way and my amcas has already been processed and verified so i guess its too late anyways. Its good to know that professors are understanding, I was a little worried about that. Thanks a lot again for the advice, I really appreciate it! 🙂

Oh ya, do you only send a letter of intent if you find out you are on a waitlist or is this something you do after the interview?

I have a laptop and i found it to be very handy. however there are many peopel who don't have one and made out just fine. there was someone who had a tablet though and that was cool because they could write write on ppt slides! but it isn't a neccesity.

woldhokie,

I would write the letter of intent after the interview. Here is what I would do....lets assume you interview at EVMS....after your interview it is good form to write short thank you letters to your interviewers...if you forget their names, which you will...there are three of them....you can call the admissions office and they will give them to you?your thankyou should be brief but personal?

?My name is X, and I would like to thank you for taking time to conduct my interview on X day. <Insert one sentence pertaining to your experience directly with them>. The time spent at EVMS during my interview day only validated my interest to attend. Again thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you in the future?

In accordance to current technological trends look up their emails?.however, not to push anyone the wrong way follow each e-mail with a letter addressed to the ADCOM in care of their name. Once these reached the ADCOM they are probably copied and sent to the appropriate interviewer. However, this approach covers all grounds and assures that such letters remain in your file. When your file is reviewed this proof of interest can only help you! Then, a few days later write directly to the ADCOM c/o Dean a letter of intent... say that you had such a wonderful time during your interview, really enjoyed the school, see yourself fitting in, etc....and then say your intent statement at the end of this letter. If you do not feel comfortable doing this, then don?t.

After your interviews, write letters of interest to a variety of other schools you liked in the same fashion. These letters don?t go as far as intent and probably do not hold as much weight. They say? ?My time at X school of medicine validated my interest to attend in the fall. I would be honored to be accepted to this school. I look forward to hearing from you in the near future.? I feel this is ethical because you DID enjoy the school and COULD see yourself fitting in there?basically saying this is your number two or three or four choice without saying it explicitly. It would not be a good idea to say I love your school but it is my number three choice. The letter of interest can be interpreted by the ADCOM as a strong or relatively weaker statement. When one applicant writes this statement, it may be intended to be on the weaker side ?however subjectively this may be as strong of a statement as another person may ever make (thus, their number one school)?there in lies the beauty of it. Guess it is a play with words, but ethical.

Dave

Hi,
Here is some random advice to some of the q'sI saw in the above posts...

You can hook up your laptop to internet ports in the study rooms in teh library. that beings said...ABSOLUTELY DO NOT GET A LAPTOP!!!!!!!! If you are like me then you will stay in the library and do nothing except download mp3s and it will take you 8 hours to do 3 hours of work. I REPEAT, KEEP YOUR LAPTOP AWAY FROM THE LIBRARY!!!

It is better to have and not need than to need and not have when it comes to buying review books.

1st year, old tests are key. There are soooo many repeat questions its not even funny (especially when you are like me and you discover this fact only second semester).

If you are going to be an M1, be sure to buy an M2 lunch at least once a week.

Coops are key for anatomy, and neuroscience especially.

Have fun. School is a lot of stress and a lot of fun.

Peace!

BT

Hello all -

I just got accepted off the waitlist today. I was going to go to Drexel in Philly, now I'm leaning toward EVMS, and I have a few questions.

1. When does school start (both orientation and classes)?
2. What type of learning (integrated? traditional? organ-bases? etc)
3. Student clinical experience/volunteer opportunities.
4. How exactly does the note-taking service work?
5. EVMS or Drexel?
6. Are PDAs required? Can PDAs and laptops be added to our budget for loan purposes?

Please help!

Piggirlee

In response to some of the above q's...

do not get a PDA just yet. You certainly don't need it for first year.

I too wanted to go to Drexel (because I am from PA and wanted to remain in state). Drexel has a wireless campus. EVMS doesn't. But EVMS has interrnet ports in the library (which are dangerous because you'll download mp3's rather than looking at your virtual slidebox or whatever else you're into).

see the above posts in regards to the note taking service.

the style of learning is: memorize these few hundred pages and forget a lot of it after a week. Be prepared to be in exam mode all the time except for a few weeks here or there because we have exams pretty much every week in a different subject. You will learn a lot and you will forget a lot and it will be a lot of fun and a lot of stress. It is not systems based. The courses tend to have some concurrent cross over for subject matter but not so much.

yeah ditto what neurotrancer said about the laptops i surfed quite a bit when my comptuer what hooked up in the library. BUT when i had ensconced myself there all day it was my only connection to the outside world. at least a world beyond those big windows. i think i'm going to study at home more next year. that library was depressing. i had studied at home mroe the first semester and it was less stressful for some reason. but that may have been a lack fo phys and biochem. 🙄

1) How many to a body in gross? and we get to make the cuts, right?

I heard of some places that have someone do it for the students b/c it is cleaner and you can see the anatomy better. But I would rather have the hands on experience.

2) Also are there deals on computers through EVMS?

Mine is pretty beat and I was wondering if I should hold off until classes start.

i emailed the admissions office with a few questions last week, # of students per cadaver being one of them. they emailed back saying the ratio is 5 students/body. i don't know whether they're pressected or if we do the actual dissecting.

believe me you will learn better if you do it yourself. i can't believe that there are places that actually do it for the students. that said it does get old and i found the best way to study was to look at the list of previously tagged parts (this will be on a cd that you will receive) and look them up in rohen. it is an experience you haev to have. you must get that formaldehyde smell trapped in your nose and have guts all over your scrubs. that has to happen for you to get the true feel of anatomy lab.😉 😀 oh and it is 4-5 people to a cadaver. if all of your team shows up and then there are those that for personal or religious reasons don't wnat to dissect. and then it is frustrating to know what you are looking at so it may end up being 2 people in your group.

Anyone! I will be flying into VA this Sunday (07/11/04), looking for a place to live all day Monday, and flying back to San Diego on Tuesday. I am hoping to not have to pay for a hotel for 1/both nights - are any of you current or soon-to-be med students willing to let me stay with you for a night?

anyone interested in meeting before classes start?

someone mentioned cheap pitchers at the Red Dog saloon.

does sat. the 14th at 8 pm work?

I would like to applu to EVMS and was wondering what good aspects about the school are and what kind a area it is and how hard is it to get accepted along with how hard is it to gte a secondary application.

Thnx for your help

Neo...works well for me....maybe earlier then that sat? When does everyone think would be a good time?

Dave

hey callendm

I am open to meeting earlier as well, but I'm just not sure when I'll arrive. The eighth is my target, but I'm driving cross country... I'm not even sure when I am leaving yet.

I just figured that most people will be there by the 14th. When are other people planning on arriving in Norfolk?

Notice: To any current EVMSers - we'll buy beer if you'll divulge useful info for our success as MSIs.

Especially info on old tests...

I love th 14th. I probably won't be there long before that. If y'all want to meet earlier, that's cool too. I'll be there in spirit. 🙂

I can make it on the 14th. I'm driving across country too and expect to arrive the 7th or 8th.

hey guys, your big sib will give you a CD with old tests on it and maybe some books or other goodies from our first year.

lemme know what else you need to know.
also, this is a website we started last year aroudn this time. it has some useful information:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/evms2007/?yguid=156305155
look under files and links too.

2008'ers

Here is a link to a page that we have put together on our EVMS 2007 site. IT has some information on housing and also a student guide packet that will answer many questions for you. If you attended preview day then you already have the packet, if not, please visit the site and download it or print it out. It is basically a "what you need to know" guide created by the class of 2007. Enjoy!!

Hey guys,

Maybe some of you have some insight...

I was accepted to the EVMS Medical Masters Program. It's a one-year masters program with medical school coursework and apparently if you do well, you will receive admission to EVMS the following year. Maybe some of you former M1's saw the masters students around?? How did they like the program and was EVMS true to their word?

I have a few days left to make a decision between the EVMS program and Georgetown's highly reputed one-year masters in physiology. Maybe some of you can shed light on this subject.

Thanks!

MD Rapper

EVMS?s program is small with an enrollment of 11 (?99), 9 (?00), 13 (?01), 12 (?02), 15 (?03) in recent years. I had a family friend who was enrolled in the (?01) program. I am almost certain 12/13 were accepted into EVMS the following year. With such a size it would be safe to conclude that those on the ADCOM will know you...if you catch my drift. One of my roommates next year will be a Medical Master?s student and not an M1. I do not treat him any different than anyone else. He was able to get a lot of information by speaking to the director of the program. I think he told me that 12/15 got in last year?.those that did not receive an acceptance got mediocre marks in atleast one class. Basically, if you show proficiency you are golden. EVMS does treat their Biomedical Master's students well from what I can tell.

Georgetown is reputable and was the first program of this kind started. However, this program is rather large with over 100 students I believe (I looked on their website). With Georgetown accepting only 20 into their program the following year I can see the set up for a competitive atmosphere to arise. The way I see it is that a good amount of those at Georgetown probably would have gotten in the following year with or without the program. What I mean is that they are accepted early in the application year before the program held any real wait. Are you one of those students? If not, be careful, you may be in for a rollercoaster of a ride!

Dave

I vote Dave most persuasive pro-evms recruiter on here. If you're not working for the admissions office already, you should be. 😉

I went to the boston U med masters program and then went to EVMS for med school. I was also accepted to georgetown for their master's program, but I met a lot of people who did it and recommended against it. It's fiercely competitive and not a whole lot of the masters students get into their med school. As for other med schools, the lower scores may make it difficult even though most med schools know how competitive the program is. I'd look at the success rates for each program. BU was at 97% when I attended. EVMS is pretty high too. Check on GT before deciding to go there... it's a ton of money with no guarantees.

I have a few days left to make a decision between the EVMS program and Georgetown's highly reputed one-year masters in physiology. Maybe some of you can shed light on this subject.

Thanks!

Hey y'all, I have another sort of computer question.

My computer bit the dust this summer. Officially and right in the middle of a timed online exam. It was very dramatic. As a result, I'm def planning on getting a new laptop and I want to use the $2000 refund-loan for computer purchases. However, I'm really poor right now and can't really afford to be out the money I spend on my computer until loan checks come in. Is it possible to survive the first few weeks of school without a computer? My mom has offered me her old computer, but it is so slow and malfunctional that I think I would get more satisfaction just throwing it out the window. Borrowing the funds from my parents might be an option, but it's a fairly painful option that I REALLY want to avoid.

What would y'all recommend?

credit cards? that's what i did. if you're lucky, the bill won't come until after fin aid disbursements.

I know it's pathetic, but I don't have any! The only credit card I've ever had was a student account with Express. And that's closed. Not that it would be useful in this sitch anyhow...

MCP-I'm a second year now and word of advice about computers. You really dont' need one for the first few weeks or as some of my classmates have gone no personal computer for the year. The building is open 24/7 for you to use the computer lab. Like Neurotracer said, if you're going to just download junk and mess around, probably what he or she did a lot of, it's a distraction to get a laptop. You won't be able to use the web or email until the first day of school, though, so if you're in town before the start of school you either have to wait or grab one of us to help you out.

In terms of credit cards, AMA or AMSA gives you a free Netter's upon getting a credit card if you want to wait. Netter's is a must and it's $80 if you want to buy it alone.

My class' yahoo website should have the rough schedule for your first week from last year. Just don't be late, the first day of school starts at 8:00 or 9:00 and what we heard last year was that if you're not present for certain activities, you're seat is gone...Rumor, but I took it seriously, as did everyone else.

Good luck and enjoy your last 2.5 weeks before school. If you need anything specific, dont' hesitate to send a private message to one of us. My classmates are very helpful toward each other and we really care for one another, so call if you need.

KBSO 🙂

Hey guys,

I have now successfully moved to Ghent. Wiith some extra time before my cable and internet get connected I have had ample time to come up with the following questions/concerns?.

Cell Phones ? I have had Verizon for years now. Last spring I got swindled into another promotion entailing a two year deal. Non-the less no hard feelings as I am happy with my plan and previous coverage. What cell phones do most people have down at EVMS? I am coming from a high populous of Verizon users?saving my butt when it comes to free in-network calling. My concern stems from the fact that just my luck I get a sub-par reception here in Ghent. It looks like I have enough, but I am just not use to not having 100% coverage. Must be the lead paint in my turn of the century house?jk. Is Verizon?s coverage great and if not what is? Basically, would it be worth it to bite the early termination fee? Also, do most people change their cell phones to local numbers?

Class Schedule ? I cannot for the life of my locate the M1 class schedule for the Fall?.I can find last year?s for the Spring but not the Fall. When and what can I expect for class?

Computers ? Is EVMS wireless? Are their laptops available to rent at the library? Advantages/disadvantages to having a laptop? I know this topic has already been discussed. However, I would like a little more insight. My PC works great as I have just revamped it. I originally wanted a laptop?but I see no real reason to shell out the doe if I already have a perfectly fine operating computer. What do you think?

Flooding ? My basement flooded two nights ago!!! Is this a normal occurrence down near the water (Stockley Gardens)? Nothing ruined becuase I got the suttle hint be it that everything down their was elevated.

Hey mcP
I'm not familiar with the "refund-loan" could you please educate me. I'm going to get a new laptop in the next week or two also.

Dave,

If I get into town early, I'll try to track you down for a practice beer or two at the Red Dog.

In addition to the regular loans, there's also a one-time loan for a computer up to (I think) $2,200. But first you have to buy the computer and then, after you give them your receipt, they'll give you a refund. Except it's not really a refund since you have to pay it back eventually. So it's a refund-loan.

callendm,

Cell Phones ? Verizon is okay in some parts of norfolk. Horrible inside of lewis hall though. I would suggest Sprint or SunCom. Probably would lean towards sprint.

Computers ? The computer lab on campus is open 24/7, a computer is not necessary at all if you don't want to spend the cash.... EVMS is not wireless, and will probably never be while you are there.... The library is wireless, but you have to use their computers or something. Its a really odd setup.

Flooding ? Get used to flooding in Norfolk. Sunday night flooding was a little more extreme than usual.. My car was actually flooded that night.

Since you are in town I would suggest securing yourself a locker in the student lounge. See Carmen Brown in student affairs for a padlock.
