I echo EVMSer, the flooding will be a big problem depending where you live.

Scheduling, you probably won't get a schedule until the first or second week of school, this place loves to keep you in the dark or keep you on your toes (depending how you look at it)in terms of scheduling.

Most important, our class has got the 1st week full of activities to welcome the class of 2008. The least of your concerns should be hitting the books. Enjoy the first week or so. There will be a big sib-little sib picinic, evms picnic, endless outtings to fine drinking establishment, and some non-alcoholic fun too.

kbso

hey kbso (and other ghent residents)

Where should I live to avoid flooding? We're planning on buying a condo in the ghent area. We've got dogs, so would like some type of "yard." A garage would be nice, but that seems like a remote possiblity in the ghent.

I've got great short-term housing lined-up, but I'd love to have your suggestions and insights.

thanks

you can look up the flood zones on this map:
http://gis.norfolk.gov/website/htmlviewer/genmap/viewer.htm

isabel proved to us how low lying this area is. sunday night was an anomaly. doesn't really flood that often.

i think someone asked about potential advisors. if you're interested in surgery, Dr. Britt is the one to see. For ER, Dr. Counselman is well regarded. both are known for getting students into programs. despite the primary care focus, surgery is one of evms's strength. we used to have the best plastics program in the country. operation smile is based here. vascular surg is among the best. urology is top 50. ent is excellent. strange factoid: we used to be one of the best gender reassignment places in the world. there will be an upcoming article within the next year in archives of surgery about the school.

the standardized patient program is incomparable. i know the m2s think ITP is silly, but it's probably THE class that will make the biggest difference on the kind of doctor you are. i'd be so lost on the wards without that class. we now have remodeled the 4th year skills exam to mirror the Step 2 CS (we did write some of the test cases after all, and they modeled the testing centers after ours). where else can you find that?

computers: just buy one of those $500 deals on dell. it'll last you the whole time. all you need a computer for is email, word, powerpoint, and the internet to look up articles.

ghent: a lot of classmates have found places in the area. but yes garaged places are hard to find. some people were listing places on student.evms.edu for sale under virtual market.

masters program: if you work hard and do well, you will have a spot here in med school. yes 12/13 got in one year. they all worked hard and earned their spots.

good luck to all you m1s. as an m4, it's amazing how fast the time has gone by. some advice: 2nd year is the toughest; 4th year the easiest. 1st year is the most fun, and 3rd year is the most rewarding. remember to work hard/play hard. sure everyone will say honor everything and get 260+ on step 1s. but be realistic too. and when things are bad, remember P=MD.

enjoy the first week of school, make lots of friends and enjoy being an m1. you've come to an excellent school.

When I said my basement "flooded"....this was not terrible...just a few inches. Nothing to cuase you to avoid living in the area neo.

Verizon...shoot...I checked today in the Library and the reception is "OK" as long as you are close to a window. Maybe if I get a new phone the reception will improve.

By the way it sucks not having internet down here...I cannot figure out where anything is without guessing and driving...waiting for my roommate with the wireless router to get here. I went to some bars in downtown Norfolk - Granby street the other night. It was a good time, slow probably becuase it was a Wed. Is anyone else getting down here soon?

Thank you to all the upperclassmen who are offering advice on here. Y'all are awesome and really helpful! I def appreciate it. Keep it coming. 🙂

If you are a new M1 in town, an M3 is playing tonight (saturday) at Eliots Fair Grounds Coffee shop. Its across from Starbucks on Colley Street. should be a fair number of EVMS students there. Will be playing mostly cover songs, its always a good time. Go out and meet some new people, we are all friendly!!

Hey guys,

I finally have my internet hooked up here in Ghent. A few of us M1's have been hanging out and ready to meet some new people.... anyone else gotten into town yet? Feel free to call me at 540-421-4880.

Dave

You guys are going to have a lot of fun the first week of school at EVMS. You have class, but it is just an orientation of sorts and there are a lot of activities planned. I am a 3rd year, but hopefully I'll get to meet some of you as the years go by.

I got into town Saturday afternoon (after 4.5 LONG days of driving!), sent my friend back to san diego yesterday, and am now officially bored. my movers told me today that my stuff likely won't arrive for at least 2 weeks, so I can't even settle into my place yet.

feel free to give me a call if anyone wants to hang out. i'm not at all familiar with the area, and i keep getting lost when i venture too far, so i haven't had much chance to see what all there is.

Finally up and running in Ghent. (Cox stood me up a few times)

So... When are we all getting together?

Sounds like some people are already hitting up Colley Ave. When is the next get together?

Any thoughts on that Red Dog place that one of the EVMS students recommended?

Since we don't really have all that much to do this week is anyone down for hanging out some night this week?

Give me a buzz whenever. 757-222-1143

Cox was 8 hours late for us...so I hear you on that one James

I am out of town tonight. I am sure we will get something together tomorrow night...either out to a bar, BBQ, or poker. That has been the usual routine with nothing to do...not complaining of course.

Hi all, I'll be an M-1 at EVMS, and was wondering as to how I should go about getting my books... Also, how much money should I put aside for them? I need to do my budgeting now before I go completely broke. Do the professors tell you what books to get, or are we supposed to get a list of books to get from the registrar's? Where's the best place to get them? Is there a bookstore on campus, or are we supposed to go find them on our own?

Hey ya'll...I have been number one on the out-of-state waitlist for two weeks now! :scared:
I was wondering if you knew anyone who is going to forfit their position? I hope and pray that I can be your classmate Monday.
Any advice?
I'm so stressed out!

Ngemie...it is out of your control now...GOOD LUCK!

Dave

Hey y'all:

Good luck with classes starting! I did my internship at EVMS in 02-03. One place y'all have to go check out is the "Biergarten", in Old Town Portsmouth. Get on the Ferry and ride it to the first stop, and then walk up the main strip. It's got the most amzing German Beer and 'wursts... man, I still miss that place!! You've also got to go to the Commodore Theater (also in Old Town Portsmouth), which is a restaraunt/movie house, which was done up real nice like. Good luck to you all!

Hey guys. I've got an interview 9/22 at EVMS (I just heard - I am so excited!) and was wondering if anyone had any advice beside the standard stuff. What's the panel interview like? Are the tours/presentations sort of relaxed so you can ask questions? I've heard so many great things about this school, and it's my first interview, so I'm a little nervous, but mostly excited. How hard is it to get around? I don't think I'm going to rent a car, and coming from CA, I'm thinking I'll just stay near the airport.
Any advice would be great!
Thanks!

I'd say everything is pretty relaxed. That's also my advice, relax and have fun. I really enjoyed my interview.

I think it's better to stay downtown on granby st. There are more food options than by the airport and you are closer to the school and don't have to worry about traffic.

It's probably a 5 min and 5.00 cab ride from downtown to the school. Everything downtown is walking distance from everything else. Not sure about cab fare from the airport, there may be shuttles to the larger hotels. There is a radisson not too far from the school.

If you contact Carmen Brown, she may be able to hook you up with a place to stay or ?..... You should be able to find her number on the website. I know I've seen it on portal, but I don't know it off hand.

good luck

Thanks for the advice. I think I'm going to stay at the radisson - they've got a good deal. Good to hear it's not too much of a stress interview - I should be able to have a little fun! 🙂

Hey y'all
I just had my interview a while ago and I'm trying to find the contact information for my student interviewer. I tried calling the admissions office and they gave me the student's name but it didn't come up on the EMVS directory. Do yall know of any other way that I could find his email or address? Thanks a lot!
