I applied to International Medical University which is in Malaysia which has it's pre-clinicals in Malaysia and clinicals in either UK/US/AUS/IRELAND/CAN/NZ. But my main concern is that i would not be exposed to any dissections of cadavers there as they don't use them for teaching. Would this affect and make me at a disadvantage compared to my other peers overseas? Also, i was wondering if anyone knows what the standard of teaching there is like and is it quite hard to understand them. (heard there are lots of Indian lecturers?)

Alternatively, i could apply to other medical schools, which expose me to cadavers and dissections but cost more.

Is dissection really important in the learning of anatomy/physiology? Will i be at a loss during my clerkship years if i am not exposed to any dissections?

hello i'm a 5th yr from IMU in melb now and i have to say i didnt do any cadaver dissections and i'm just as well versed in anatomy as those who did. so i wil say a big fat no to any disadvantage if any from my point of view.
having done rat dissections in preU i'm not surprised either.
a lot of ppl seem to think of dissecting a cadaver as a rite of passage for med school which i think is misguided.
standard of teaching in IMU is comparable to other places. ask most of your seniors in PMSs they will tell u the same. anyway tread ur own path 😛 where else r u considering?

I only have one senior (actually my ex-classmate) studying in IMU, so, not too sure about the how they cope, that was why i actually posted it on the forum, cos really need the advise from a wider spectrum of people.

Just don't like the feeling of being shortchanged of something considering that the fees are nearly equal that overseas.

Other universities i'm considering university of adelaide, UCDublin, TrintyCD, NUI Galway, UCCork...

the fees for IMU are decent. look at other UK and Oz schools they r scary. and dont forget cost of living. but seeing as u r a singaporean (read from another thread) u might consider whether the degree is recognised by ur govt.

u could organise a dissection elective. some of my friends did that for their elective. i'm not much of a fan of spenidng time with formalin soaked bodies to each his own i guess.

having been to 2 different med schools i have to say IMU is pretty decent and not at all wanting in facilities and services for the MOST part. we get more lectures than melb uni and adelaide uni students per week during preclinicals and also had more clinical teaching/exposure. one of IMU's past students graduated top of her class in one of the PMS (dundee i think or glasgow). there are things that could improve but thats a whole new rant 😛. like the fact that the building we r in used to be a shopping mall before being bought by the IMU ppl lol

good luck with your choice. i'll be happy to answer ur questions about IMU and Melb Uni to the best of my ability if u have any

Also, actually wanted to ask what is the rate of matching to a US residency if i did pre-clinicals at IMU and clinicals in Canda?
