I am debating whether or not do a residency or just look for a job. I would prefer to just start working, but I've heard that most practices won't accept someone fresh out of dental school. Is that true? Is there anyone out there who has been successful in finding a job without a residency? Please share your experience!

Also, if I want to do a specialty in the future or look for a better paid job, would they look more favorably upon residency OR few years working as a regular dentist?

Some specific statistics would be great: what percentage of dental graduates successfully find a job right after graudation, without doing a GPR /AEGD?

GPR's & AEGD's are becoming more common, but the majority of new dentists still go straight to work after graduating. If that's what you want to do, you'll have no trouble finding a job.

i go to school in what i thought was a saturated area, and almost all of the seniors that graduate in May have found jobs. quiet a handful of them are even working 6 days per week!

You don't need a residency to find a job as a dentist. Fact is you will hate your first "job" or your first few "jobs" as a dentist. A gpr does help if you want to specialize later on.

Diagnodent is right about the GPR helping you if you want to specialize later, provided you do one where you build some good contacts and get more proficient in procedures in your intended specialty.

A GPR can be a very good experience if you are learning and practicing advanced techniques and procedures. If all you are going to do is pull teeth and make dentures, then skip it. Unless you don't know how to pull teeth or make dentuers (scarily I have met grads who have done neither), then it's probably a good idea for you.
