Unless, of course, you wish to debate affirmative action or allopathic versus osteopathic education. Those topics are always welcome and we regulars never tire of them.citygirl said:Just about every topic related to the pre med process has already been covered here. Instead of asking about what to wear to the interview or whatever, use the search function (top of the page) so you all don't have to keep reinventing the wheel.
Just kidding. citygirl is on the money.

Alas, even with those topics the thread can just be continued instead of starting a new one.

Although don't you find it odd when someone uses search to locate an old thread on a particular topic and then posts a response to a message that may be a couple years old? It's not like the person who wrote the original message is likely to be hanging around waiting for the response.citygirl said:Alas, even with those topics the thread can just be continued instead of starting a new one.
Edited to ask: confess, now, citygirl: you didn't do a search to find threads about using the search engine, did you?
Making this a temporary sticky.

Confessing *sheepishly* no I didn't search 😳

I would advise making it a permanent sticky, but I would like to include tips on how to search. I would start, but I'm not particularly good at it. If no one volunteers, I will anyway.
I think that this is going to eventually be made into the "Pre-Allo FAQ." If I can just find the time. Anyone willing to write up a section? Here's what I envision:MoosePilot said:I would advise making it a permanent sticky, but I would like to include tips on how to search. I would start, but I'm not particularly good at it. - What's allowed and not allowed in this forum (me)
- Using the search function before mindlessly repeating the same question asked 2 days ago (????)
- Using the MSAR to answer life's pesky problems (rolling vs. non-rolling, phone #s, etc) (me)
- Application deadlines, etc. (???)
- What to wear at interviews (????)
- Should you write thank yous? (???)
And so on. Anyone wanna volunteer to write something???? 😀 😀 😀

Like I said, I'll do the section on the search function if nobody speaks up with a strong feeling of competence soon 😀

is it just me...i hate finding an old debate thread and starting in the middle of it. First i don't want to read an exceptionally long thread that i wasn't previously involved in. Secondly maybe the participants are no longer available and you want to bring up a previously discussed issue. Third. it's hard to tell what new was added if the debate continues and it's hard to keep o[ening the "more replies below this one" boxes when you'r enot sutr eif anything new has been added. Am i the only one who prefers a new thread on the same topic?
ok don't throw anything at me for saying that! 😛
MoosePilot said:Like I said, I'll do the section on the search function if nobody speaks up with a strong feeling of competence soon 😀
the search engine needs more explicit rules posted in an obvious place. newbies aren't even going to think to search for anything when they are new at the software and don't know how it works.
gee i know i'vwe been guilty at that...more times than i care to admit 😳
please don't...
ask us what your chances are at such and such school with such and such stats. we're not psychics, we're not adcoms, but most importantly, we don't give a rat's ass about whether you make it in or not because if you make it in then that means there's one less spot for the rest of us.
try to diminsh your accomplishments nor overtly brag about your triple major in biochemistry/russian/underwater basking weaving at harvard. while crack may be a great stimulant, the rest of us are trying to graduate with a regular biology degree from podunk university.
start another thread about how you're addicted to sdn and what you did to keep your post count up high. it really isn't cool that you spend all your free time on the internet with a bunch of anonymous people. oh yeah--laughing about how sdn should be an ec activity is overkilled so don't make that joke or otherwise i will have to kill you. here's a suggestion: instead of spending time on your fat ass just getting fatter as you stay on sdn, why don't you immerse yourself in a real healthcare environment so then you know if you really want to go into healthcare instead of being the ignoramus freshman that thinks it'll be "really really really really cool to be a doctor and wear those cool white coats?"
and as much as you would like to keep your idealism of being this amazing doctor one day just remember that there have been many a great doctors who have gone before you and other great doctors who will come after you. yes, i know your momma told you you are special in your own way and blah blah blah....and i hate to be the bearer of bad news but you're really NOT THAT SPECIAL. in med school (or any other professional school) you have to remember that these school are massive conglomerates of all these smart people who are striving after the same goal. this is where the cream of the crop gather and the extraordinary suddenly find themselves being average. that's not say you won't be a great doctor but becoming anything great takes time, practice, and perfecting the art of medicine. it takes time....it doesn't happen instantaneously regardless of how successful you are.
that being said...welcome to sdn.

wow you just took all the fun out of it!
and do that many people really take underwater basketweaving? i'll have to check my handbook and see if it's available in the spring semester. I'm afraid since everyone else took it, i won't get into med school without it. 😀

I would definitely rather pick up the old one. Kind of like science, if every generation started over we'd do some things better, but we'd advance very slowly.

i don't have time to read long threads...and sorry i almost never do; i read part of it and write a response with a disclaimer saying "sorry if this was already said; i didn't read the whole thread"
and regardless of the topic i will never open a thread that already has over 100 posts uinless i have already posted on it from the beginning

Have you learned to search within a thread? You can search the forums, then once it gives you certain threads, you can search within those.
dude, coodoo said that? Idiot. 🙄MoosePilot said:Have you learned to search within a thread? You can search the forums, then once it gives you certain threads, you can search within those.

Yep, that #$^^#$!
Well, I'd like to see him say that when the hordes are coming over the wall. Honestly, it's amazing that people are so disconnected from reality in this (or any liberal democratic) country. 🙄MoosePilot said:Yep, that #$^^#$!

what am i searching for? i know you can put key words in for either a thread title or a post within a thread. but it's too awkward to be reading one post within 239 thread just b/c it has a key word(s) that doesn't resemble the intent of my search

Well, I like to search for one particular school. So I use the search to find anything about USUHS. Then, when I have a bunch of threads, some of which don't have anything to do with what I want, I search within the thread for USUHS to find what was said.
Sometimes I use advanced search to only find titles that have USUHS in them. That usually narrows it down, but misses some stuff.

i only use advance search b/c otherwise you get too many useless threads. it may be effective for large topics like a school's name but would not work so well for other more general topics.
With the search function, I nearly always choose to "Display Results as Posts" instead of "Display Results as Threads" so then I don't have to go scrolling through a 239-post thread to find the little red words I wanted highlighted. It's that teeny radio button at the bottom of the search form. I highly recommend it!! Then, you can get more specific with adding more keywords because the sheer number of your hits will increase (there generally being more than one post per thread containing the words you were looking for). Works for me, at least! 😀
Oh yeah, this is assuming you start out with the Advanced Search function to begin with.

you mean then it will list the post since after another and would not require you actually going into the thread?
will it allow you to go into the thread if then you want to?
Yes - at least in my browser, it lists them with thread title first (linked) and then the title of the post (linked), followed by the first several words of the post for a preview. You can click on either the thread link or the post link. When you click on the post link, it should take you to the post within the thread, which allows you access to the rest of the thread immediately while plopping you in the right place to start off. I really like this system; it's actually pretty intelligently designed. 👍
i'll have to try it...but does it list the post so you don't have to open the threads if you don't want to? b/c somew of the posts will prove useless to wha tyou were searching for and i'd hate to open and close all the threads.
ok if this is how it works, i vote for clear concise rules on its use b/c i didn't know this and i'm sure others didn't either.

Well, they give you the first couple of lines of each post, so when you click on one it's not completely without knowing the initial gist. Other than that, yeah, you have to go through them... I like to open them in new tabs in the browser so they load in the background.

thanks a lot; i'll try it but i'd really prefer it not to make us have to go to the thread if it could very well end up not being something you were looking for. No wonder people start new threads all the time on the ame topic.

I disagree with the original poster. You do a search and you find posts that are years old. Then, you post on the 10th page where no one looks anymore. I don't see anything wrong with posting questions that are technically new to the newbies (as that's who really matters on the PRE-allo board anyway). Fresh perspectives on fresh posts -- that's what I want to see. 😎

i agree exactly. I for one will not open threads that are pages long.

Hey, it was just a suggestion in case you nubes didn't know that searching was an option. Obviously a lot of pertinent information needs to be fresh.

A-men to that, my friend.
I don't mind having the new post either. Besides if we make people have to jump through hoops to post on here the less likely they are going to want to post and get involved. Yeah its tedious when your looking at the same questions, but no one says you have to asnwewr the same questions over and over...leave it empty if you really don't want to reply, someone else surely will. Plus I dont read more than the first page either when looking at a post, takes too long, and if I really want to know what is going on I will have to spend more time reading it. This is the MD section, the same questions are going to be asked, just like at a conference, the same questions are always asked. But that is why we are here, to answer each newbies question. School kids ask the same question every year but you don't see the teacher making a search engine for their questions 😉 i do love the welcome message though, i think some people come in here thinking they are all that, when really we are all just average 🙂
Throw the book 🙂 im ready to dodge

Evo - you're a moderator now? Jeez, things change fast! Congratulations, I think?
OP - if we didn't rehash old topics in this forum in particular and most forums in general, there would be nothing on here except the incessant beating of cricket legs. Let the kids ask their questions over and over again every year, that's half the fun. You wouldn't say "You had a birthday last year, do we have to do that again?"
😉
Oh and LJoo - so nice to see you're your usual bitter self - I miss you!
