I am having one of those gray gloomy days..mabey cuz it's raining in So. Cali but I applied for the Fall 2008 , got only one interview 2 mo. ago and haven't heard anything. many rejections though. anyway, my questions to those who re-applied..

1. If i reapply this year for 2009 cycle, is the process the same as new applicants, or the same?

2. Do i need to submit NEW letters of rec? or same ones, cuz i have been out of school for a year, and i have no way of getting new ones.

3. How is your personal statement different than when u first applied? what do u focus on, seeing as how the topic questions is the same?

4. I have anothe ryear off as i reapply, I currently work as a dental assistant, but can non-students obtain research position at Universitys?

thanx..PM me or post here for others in my situation here too.

Well first off, i wouldn't give up as of yet for the one interview you had, some schools are still notifying people!
If you do have to reapply here is the answer to your questions

1. The process is pretty much the same, except some schools have sections on their secondary apps for re-applicants and they ask certain questions about what you have done differently this time around so be prepared to answer something like that.

2. Yes you need to resubmit your letters, you will have to contact the professors and ask them to re send it, AADSAS does not save anything from the previous application cycle, you will have to re-enter all your info

3. I did not change my personal statement but i'm not sure if others did or not, mine really did not need any changing, my reasons for going into dentistry didn't change.

4. Not sure about this question, best thing would be to contact your school

Best of luck to you!

I would find out where your application is weak and try to improve that. Then, write your personal statement to reflect what you have done. If you reapply with the same application...I am not sure that you should expect different results....also apply really early.

this is my third year applying, so i've played the reapplicant game twice. the advice i can give you is similar to the above posters, but i would say that the biggest thing is showing you have improved yourself as an applicant each year. take more upper level science courses, volunteer in dental clinics, do research, whatever. then, when you do have interviews, make sure you highlight your improvements.

as for getting a research position as a post-bac/non student, i would say the best way to do so is by volunteering. i am working as a volunteer research assistant one day a week. the doctor i'm working with was willing to take me on when he learned i was passionate about dentistry and willing to work for free. use any connections you have to find out if hospitals have craniofacial centers or other dental related research programs you can work with.

and to echo the above poster: apply early. have your app in by june 1st at the latest. that way even if your stats aren't super stellar, at least you are one of the first people the adcoms see. and research which schools will most likely take candidates with stats like yours. it saves you from applying to schools you have no chance getting into. good luck.

1. Yeas its the same, just have to redo everything. A few different areas i had to fill out.

2. No, i submitted the exact same three letters of rec.

3. In general my personal statement was exactly the same. I added small things here and there and changed sentence strucutre.

4. What i did for my year off was finish school and do more research. I also added to my hours of shadowing. I did not do anything dental related, i bartended and worked at a marina. To answer your question, yes you can. Expecially if its the university you went to. Talk to some of your teachers and see if htey have openings. Thats probably the best way to get in a lab.

hope this helps ya some

Don't forget some schools may retain your application from previous attempts. Call up each school that you applied to see if they do that.
