  1. Podiatry Student
I was able to get my letter or recommendation from a podiatrist earlier than I expected so I have all my letters ready to send and my AACPMAS completely filled out. They just haven't received my MCAT and a transcript from one school yet. I was wondering if I should still submit my application and pay now or wait until they have all my documents. I'm just kind of anxious and want to submit it but don't know if it would be the best decision. 😕😕

21mcat, 3.17 cGPA, 3.1 sGPA with my last three semesters being: 3.4, 3.2, 3.8. I went through a lull my junior year and had a brain tumor removed so my GPA was pretty hampered by that. I'm not sure what AACPMAS will have it calculated as, but they should be about the same I would imagine.

Personally, I would submit.

I submitted it Saturday night and already have an invitation to interview at Kent State 🙂. Hopeful for a few more interviews!

I wanted to schedule it for then first week in January, but I have a wedding to attend in which I'm a groomsmen, so its on January 11th. I'm trying to mentally prepare myself for the cold. Still a toasty 80 degrees here in Florida!

Ohhh right Florida is going to be different.
Barry is one of my top choices, and I'm from CA, never been to Florida.
Do you think the weather is drastically different?

If you like humidity and sweat stained clothes from only being outside for 15 minutes, thunderstorms every day at 3pm and snowbirds that don't know how to drive you'll love it. I've lived here my whole life and love/am used to it, but I want to experience something different.

yes, but the pollo is delicious.

hmmm, def something to consider.
Have you visited Barry?

are you from there too?

im not from miami but i have family in naples, FL, and from there we visit miami from time to time. the pollo is killer and i like to eat it with rice n beans, yum!

Oh without a doubt the cuban cuisine is delicious. Myself being half cuban enjoys rope vieja, arroz con pollo and other cuban staples whenever I can. If I get an invitation/acceptance to Barry it would be quite hard to turn down. Not only because of my family situation here, but I have to go to UM every August for my yearly checkup on my brain. I would definitely have to make a very tough decision, but so far haven't heard from Barry from some reason 😕

You haven't heard from Barry yet? Hmm, well I'm kind of concerned too. Because I got an interview from them like 2 hours after AACPMAS mailed my app out to all schools. I was astonished by how fast they responded. And that was before all my LOR's were sent out.

Yeah, I only submitted my applications last Friday and am still getting some emails from schools saying they just received my application and are reviewing it. We will see I suppose.

I wouldn't be surprised if some schools are starting to receive an increased amount of applications from ppl who are freaking out they have not gotten into med school yet. That might explain why it's taken so long to hear from them, but it wouldn't hurt to give them a call some time next week if you still haven't heard anything.

My biggest worry is that podiatry will become in par with md/do schools some day in regards to admissions, hopefully not this year. Not every1 has stellar stats, their needs to be at least 1 field in medicine that will accept below avg candidtates, otherwise their would be no other field to turn to. Even PT/OT and nursing is more difficult to get into. PA school is like winning the lottery, its not a good back for md/do, kudos to those that got into PA school.

Why do you think this? Why do you think there needs to be a field with "below avg candidates"? I do not believe that is a necessity..

Well someone needs to accept the rejects otherwise those poor souls will have nothing going for them. It's not so much that they are not smart, it could be due to a multitude of reasons, family/home issues, financial issues, depression, test anxiety. Not every1 is going to have stellar stats, things can happen in our life that's beyond our control. And most don't spend 100k on undergrad just to be told that you wasted the past 4 years for nothing. If you spend time, money and energy for 4 years than i think that person deserves something. A BA is really useless unless you know someone or are really lucky. Going for a masters or phd is risky business since your not guaranteed a payoff at the end. The health/medicine field is different.

yeah w/e u just said, it sounded delicious. in nyc we sometimes get cuban-chinese food; soooo good.

barry was the 2nd to contact me. i'm thinking you weren't contacted yet b/c the admissions committee hasn't convened in awhile. each school has a different schedule.

Several things:

1) Don't call Pod students rejects.
2) The average debt of an ugrad career is certainly not 100k
3) Podiatry standards should go up. It's a main reason why others mock the profession. Haven't you ever heard DPM = didn't pass the MCAT?
4) There is a direct correlation between the admission standards and high attrition rate
5) Lastly, there is absolutely nothing wrong with getting a PHD/Masters

I never said the avg debt is 100k. I said the cost when counting room/board and personal expenses is about 100k and also 4 years of lost income potential. In most cases, not many consider pod unless they got rejected from md/do or dds. Standards should not go up in my opinion if pod schools want to fill their class seats, they'll make less money if they do that. I know students who make a complete turnaround, they dont do well in undergrad but do well in graduate school. and theirs nothing wrong with getting a masters or phd i never said that. But your chances of finding work aren't great in this economy, the health field is secure although even it is starting to feel the effects.

This is an offensive statement and certainly not true. There are of course some that use podiatry as a fall back, but to say the majority do, is disprespectful to the many of us on here where podiatry is our first choice.

The schools would never arbitrarily raise their standards so as not to fill the seats. The objective is to increase the applicant pool stats.

You already literally advocating for podiatry to be/already is the: "reject specialty." That will offend so many people. Your post suggests that there should be a medical specialty that accepts under qualified applicants because we don't know their life circumstances.

I'm overweight and a slow runner, but you don't know my life or why I am slow. So, you should let me into the Olympics because I might train really hard and be an Olympic gold medalist in the 400 meter? No. I'm never going to win any medals - even if I want I one. I know I can't. You don't need to know why I ate a slice of cake last night instead of going for a fun to know I won't be an Olympian.

I couldn't agree more! The "low standards" are as a result from a small applicant pool, not the institutions decreeing they need to take inferior students. I GUARENTEE that if pod schools had the same applicant pool md schools receive, avg gpa and mcat scores would be close if not identical for matriculating pod students vs matriculating md students! To think pod schools have to or should keep "low standard" in order to help those who were rejected from med school is asinine. That would prevent any growth for the profession within the medical community. What they should do, and are, is inform more potential students about podiatry in order to increase the popularity for podiatry, and therefore the applicant pool. As a result you will see increase gpa and mcat avgs, which is great for the field of podiatry!

With that said how long until this thread is closed due to inflammatory content? lol

Now have you tried the Special Olympics? It's the fallback for all those people who were rejected from the Olympics. You would probably medal there.

2 hours?!??! really???
Speedy Gonzales status!!

what were your stats, if you don't mind me asking?

I'm kind of hopeful. It would be a lot cheaper if I got into there because I could stay with family while in school. Plus I would be closer to my immediate family, I live in Central Florida not South Florida. But going out of state for four years and coming back for residency sounds kind of tempting too.

I got an interview form 1 of the schools 1 hour after my app was mailed. Another interview about 8-9 days later. Funny thing is I applied to some PA schools about 6 months ago and have not heard from them at all...lol

Yeah, Kent emailed me after 1 hour, and Barry was after 2 hours. 3.15 GPA / 2.94 sGPA / 26 MCAT. I think I told you my stats before. lol. Feel free to PM me, Barry is one of my top choices as well. I'll be interviewing there after winter break.

Oh whoops, sorry.
There are so many stats posted on this forum that it all becomes blurry to me. 🙂

But seeing your stats, I can see why they emailed you pretty quickly.
What are your top 3 choices?
Did you apply to all 9 schools?

I've scheduled interview with Barry, Temple, and NYCPM. Applied to all 9, only DMU rejected me. Very ironic because I got an interview invite from AZPod. Maybe DMU would have given me an interview invite had I written about how much I love cornfields in my PS. All kidding aside, I will call up DMU on Monday and ask why I was rejected. Not that I really care, but I'm on winter break right now with nothing else to do.

Also, Western wouldn't take my AP credits. They said they'll reconsider me if I promise to retake chem next semester, but I flat out refused.

What is your gpa and mcat and where did you go to school?
