To those who have interviewed/accepted at Western U

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You just need to be honest. Explain your motivations for applying to both tactfully. Your ultimate goal is to become a physician whether it be MD or DO. When you get to the secondary essay asking to explain your motivations for applying DO, talk about the aspects of osteopathic medicine that interest you and that you find appealing. Honesty is always your best bet. Adcoms have been doing this for a long time and they can smell BS a mile away.

I think they ask you which programs you applied to in your secondary application.

I didn't apply to any MD program besides CU, so it didn't really factor into my situation, but the interviewer did point out that I applied to mostly DO programs.

I applied to both (5) MD and (8) DO. I put down all schools on my 2nd application got interviews invites from all DO and 2 MD. I was accepted to all DO schools that I went on for an interview. My interview with COMP was in mid Jan/06 and I was accepted a week later. You need to put some thoughts into your 2nd application. They did question me about MD and DO schools I applied to, therefore you need to defend your position.

Also COMP likes to ask ethical questions, if you know the answer just indicate that and move on.

p.s. interview at comp could be tough. After my interview I was sure I wasn’t going to get in but it turns out they like me.

feel free to post more questions about comp

correction to my preivous post: I did not get all DO interview invistes.... I did not hear from PCOM and NYCOM and CCOM

Well, I applied to 2 DO schools (Tu-COM and Western) and 6 MD schools in TX. In all honesty, I had NO INTEREST in DO schools at the time I applied to the MD schools in Texas (Texas has TCOM). One thing I can tell ya, when I went into the interview with Western, the guy GRILLED THE CRAP OUT OF ME at the fact that I didn't apply to TCOM after reapplying to med school for 3 years. My first reasoning was "it is passed the deadline". Then, he started scolding me, "after 3 years of applying, you should KNOW when the deadlines are [shame on you]." Then I just said this BS reason that I HATE Waco, which is true compared to other areas in Austin. Since the guy was from CA, and never left the state, he seemed satisfied enough with that answer to give me a recommendation for acceptance.

One thing I have learned, don't EVER tell them the truth! DO people seem kind of . . . . well . . . I don't know, pissed, when a student says that they are just interested in being a doctor and a DO is a secondary resort for not making it to an MD school. I have grown to accept it, and like DO, because I have realized that I can achieve my same dream with either one. So, I am VERY VERY happy at making it to Western even if it's a DO. In 4 years, DO schools will be just as difficult to make it into as MD schools. That I can gaurantee!
