Are any of you thinking of re-taking the MCAT in April? I'm wondering if this is something that could help if we are still on a waiting list in June. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I was also wondering if anyone does this. Tough decision though because you pretty much need to start prepping now. Are you talking about a specific school you want to get into even though you will/do have other acceptances or are you afraid you won't get in at all? It's probably a good idea to plan to retake it if you think you might not get in. Retaking it just to improve your chances of getting off one or two hypothetical waitlists in mid-june seems pretty work intensive with little probable pay off.

Did you mean "to those not yet accepted"? Because if you meant what you wrote, why would someone who is already accepted retake the MCAT. Also, be aware that if you retake in April it will be for the next application cycle.

if it's just to get off a waitlist i dont know that it will be useful since you wont get your scores back until late june...

Yes, I meant not yet accepted. Sorry for the confusion. Currently I'm on three waitlists. I want to take steps to increase my chances being plucked off one of these or help my chances if I need to re-apply next year.

I think you might want to try getting off of the waitlist first before worrying about the MCAT. It's such a game though, right? Have you written an "update letter" to these schools? Or, did you choose one and write a letter of intent?

I think when you're on a waitlist it's really important to maintain contact with the school - not overboard, of course; use your judgment. Keep them informed, let them know how psyched you are about the school, try and contact your interviewer, etc.

But, you must still have to hear from a couple of schools, right?

In any case, I agree with an earlier poster - if your MCAT's solid you should forget about taking that monster again. I would instead put your efforts into volunteering, getting a health-related job, trying to write a paper, etc.

And I know this is advice is a little lame, but a lot can happen in the next few months. Try and hang tight.

Best of luck!

I have read other posts that claimed to get off waitlists (and get acceptances) with new, higher MCAT scores. One person even claimed that they were given a conditional acceptance, based on an increase on the April MCAT (I don't know if a specific number had to be achieved or what). Anyway, I am planning to retake the MCAT, but I have a VERY low score, and will likely not get accepted anywhere this year (unless the DO schools pull through, but I've applied very late for those as well). So I guess my situation is a little more clear cut. But if you really think your MCAT score is a likely reason you're on a waitlist, I would retake it and see if it gets you in. It may seem like potentially wasted effort, but what if you don't get in? Then you won't have prepared for the MCAT, and won't be ready to retake it anyway. I guess it's a "prepare for the worst" situation. It's alot of effort, but it may pay off in the end. Good luck on your decision, and I hope you get off those waitlists! :luck:

are you allowed to start up another amcas application the first day you can even if you are on several waitlist? i'm not an applicant this year, but just curious.
I'm pretty sure that as long as you haven't officially accepted a slot, you're fine to start your new application. I think if you do accept a position after submitting to AMCAS, then you just contact them and have it cancelled. You might lose your money though (I don't know about this one).

A friend of mine got off the waitlist after she got her April MCAT scores, so yes, it can definitely help if you MCAT score is low and you do significantly better. I wouldn't worry about not having an MCAT score until June because that is when most people get off the waitlist, since May 15th is the deadline to only be holding one acceptance. Students get off the waitlist up until school starts in the fall.

How annoying is this? Try "to those yet [to be] accepted". The "to be" is commonly implied. The orginal title is perfectly acceptable and understandable.

I would contact the schools directly and state your plans. They can give you the best guidance and you will emphasize your interest in the school at the same time. Good luck! 👍

No its not, and the OP already answered me anyway and told me what he meant. How annoying is that?

Still very annoying.

So much time is wasted on this site being pedantic and, yes, annoying. And that is not necessarily directed at you. But the OP's intent was very clear.

I guess I am just dense, it was not clear to me. I did not know if he meant waitlisted, accepted at one school but not others he wanted, or what? Sorry for annoying everyone, I really did not mean to.

Maybe the "to be" was implied, but I have to say it reads a little funny. I'm no English major, tho.

OP-work on the aspects of your application that are weak. Talk to an admissions advisor from a school that you have been rejected from (or any admissions advisor) if you are not sure what you need to work on.

Also, write an update letter to the schools you are waitlisted on. Good luck, I hope you get in. You are smart for trying to improve your app while you wait.

WHO CARES! HEREIS THE ANSWER..let this post die so the santa thread can rise up higher on the shoulder's of true popularity!

To answer the original question, yes i am starting to look over things for the april MCAT, but my advisor only told me to re-take if i thought i could do considerably better. I do because even though i got a 29 last time, i had mononucleosis from february until may, but just sucked it up and studied for the test and took it anyways. I am doing this more for if i need to reapply for 06, but if it got me off a waitlist, then it would serve its purpose.
