Hey, UCSF is probably my top choice medical school. I did not get my MCATs back yet but I was just wondering what you guys think of the school. Also, is it really hard to get in, especially for an outstater.

Hey Yaffa,
Here is a link to a very informative thread about UCSF. There are many pages, but if you have the patience, almost any question you could think of is there. The UCSF Students are really great about answering questions, so I am thinking that the lack of response is due to some sort of major test they have coming up. Good luck of the chase!

i think the UCSF students are in the middle of their last block. I believe they finish June 22nd. My friend said something about having a midterm of some sort. so that is probably why you have not had a response from them.

yaffa,

I also recommend checking out that link that sdnsdn posted. I really does address a lot of good questions. I am pretty sure it addresses the out of state issue and quite a few UCSF students chime in and share their views and experiences.

sdnsdn and NIH, you are right. we had a big test today and have our final on the 21st. less than two weeks to go and i get 8 weeks off!

yaffa915,

We did have just have a mid-term, but the school overall is very laid back in terms of academic pressure. The first two years are completely pass/fail (70%) which takes off most of the stress I remember from undergrad. I end up having every other weekend free to hangout or cruise around SF. The curriculum is very heavily based on small-group, problem-based learning though, so you need to think about if you can learn well in this type of environment. If you get a chance to come out and check out the school I would visit both a lecture and a small-group session. The lectures are usually good and are optional, but small group attendence is mandatory. Everything you are required to know is listed in a large syllabus for each block. We usually have a test (mult. choice/short answer) every three weeks that is written for two or three hours. As far as clinical exposure in the first two years, you would be seeing patients at least one afternoon a week. However, with a student-run homeless clinic and abundant preceptorship opportunities, your amount of patient contact is really how much you choose for yourself. I really have enjoyed my first year and it has not has hard as I pictured medical school would be. If you think of anything else that you want to know feel free to post your questions. Good luck with your application and waiting for you score.

Thanks alot, I really really want to go to UCSF, I loved san francisco when I visited and I love california but I am scared that they will not take me b/c I am out of state. Are there any visible students that are out of state and do they have to have significantly highter stats to get in?

I am an out-of-stater at UCSF. About 20 percent of the class is from out-of-state. On the school's admissions website it says something about 'highly qualified' out-of-state applicants are encouraged to apply. This is obviously highly subjective and the stats of the out-of-staters probably vary a lot. I would encourage you to apply if you feel your stats are decent keeping in mind that UCSF also weighs unique extracurricular experiences very heavily. My pre-med advisor told me that statistically if I'm not a Cali resident then I shouldn't apply to a UC. I'm glad I didn't listen. (UCSF, I believe, accepts the highest percentage of out-of-staters compared to the other UC's). Good luck with the application process!
