I'm going to work on an update to my '08 SMP list, and I'm looking for input.

I listed 30 programs in the '08 list, and based on what I included there, that list could easily grow to 100. So in pursuing current info, I suggest four categories, that I would prioritize in order.

1. Programs, like Georgetown, that "belong" to an MD school, that exist for no reason other than to improve med school credentials for people who have completed prereqs and taken the MCAT. This category would include Loyola, which doesn't put its SMP students in med school courses like "real" SMPs do. It would include VCU, which doesn't grant a masters degree. And it would include all the Tulane programs, genetics and pharm and anatomy et al, even though these are very loosely integrated with the med school if at all. This list is what I'll put the most effort into.

2. Programs, like LECOM, that "belong" to a DO school, as above. This list is my 2nd priority, because there's no evidence that there are new programs (vs. the addition of Temple on the MD list).

3. Programs, like Barry, that do not belong to a medical school, but are specifically designed for improving med school app credentials. Colorado State and Mississippi College are in this list. I'll list these as new ones show up, like I did for the '08 list.

4. Programs, like JHU's Cancer Biology and probably Mt. Sinai's Biomed, that belong to a med school, but go well beyond the scope of improving med school app credentials. I'll list these as new ones show up, like I did for the '08 list.

Also, as time permits, I'll include the acceptance numbers, tuition, app deadlines and other "MSAR" info as it's published on school websites.

Your thoughts?

you are too kind. Western in pomona posted on their website about starting a masters in biomedical sciences (possible smp like program).

At this point they're advertising a 2 yr MS in Biomed Sci, aimed at researchers. That's category 4.

Keep 'em coming.

Hey Dr. MDLife,

I wanted to know your opinion of Mount Sinai's MS Biomed program. I'm graduating undergrad next month and will be going through an informal post-bac during the spring semester and the following summer. I am a NY residence and am looking for CREDIBLE SMP programs without having to leave the state (due to monetary restrictions).

If you don't think that staying in NY for an SMP is a viable option, what would u suggest? (I was considering NYMC but based on some of the responses on these forums, I'm not sure if its as widely accepted by medica schools as the website suggests.)

Thanks a bunch in advance.

First question: what do you need an SMP for? It's my impression that the Mt. Sinai programs are extremely competitive (as are any in NYC), and are selective for future research scholars. So if you're thinking SMP because you need credential repair, I don't think this program is the best target.

The "classic" SMPs, including the new ones, are programs where you do the first year of med school to prove you can handle med school. This includes Georgetown, Cincinnati, EVMS, Tufts, and probably 2-3 more that I still need to look into.

If you're doing a postbac to complete the prereqs, that's a more optimal time to address your credentials. Doing 2 years of postbac is going to be a great deal cheaper than an SMP, and you can address the most important number: undergrad GPA.

I suggest you post more about your story in a fresh thread, so that you can get more attention and advice. This one's not really an advice thread.

Best of luck to you.

sorry, I made a mistake in my post about UCincy

Tuition IS-25k OOS 25.4k

Avg. MCAT for the current class:33.5
Avg. GPA for the current class: 3.19

good luck to all who apply. Feel free to contact me with any questions

You may want to update Midwestern.
The AZ campus offers both a MA (which is shorter and I believe has no thesis) and MS in Biomedical Sciences
The Downers Grove campus offers a MS in Biomedical Sciences
