The Next Generation TOEFL Test—TOEFL iBT
Focus on communication
The new and better TOEFL test
The new TOEFL test is a breakthrough in testing that emphasizes integrated skills, and provides better information about test takers' ability to communicate in an academic setting.
To succeed in an academic environment in which English is the language of instruction, students need to not only understand English, but also to communicate effectively. ETS has developed a new TOEFL test that will help individuals demonstrate the English skills needed for success. This next generation TOEFL test will help institutions make better decisions about prospective students' academic readiness for academic coursework. The new test will also impact the teaching and learning of English worldwide.
Internet-based Testing (iBT)
The new TOEFL test will be delivered via the Internet. Internet-based testing (iBT) allows ETS to capture speech and score responses in a standardized and fair manner. It will also make it possible to greatly expand test center access.
Timeline
ETS is committed to a successful transition worldwide. In order to maintain test and score integrity and ensure a quality administration for test takers, ETS will introduce the new test in phases.
The test will first be administered in the United States on September 24, 2005. On October 22, the TOEFL iBT test will begin in Canada, France, Germany and Italy. The test will be introduced in the rest of the world in 2006. A complete schedule will be available by November 1, 2005. See the TOEFL iBT timeline for more details. A list of frequently asked questions about the phased rollout is available.
ETS will continue to administer the current computer-based and paper-based versions of the test until the new Internet-based test is implemented.
For updates on the new test, visit this site often and attend one of our upcoming conference presentations, college and university workshops, or teacher development workshops.

how to prepare for toefl?? any tips?

Assuming that you do not have problems with the language part of it:

1)Get hold of that CD and practise all the exercises and mock tests 1,00,000 times. Just kidding not so many times. But at least 5-10 times. That makes you familiar with the format and so when you actually take the exam, you don't waste any time in understanding what it is they want to know.

Assuming that you are not so comfortable with the languagae:

1)Watch at least one English movie everyday. If you are in India, you can get DVDs with Hindi subtitles. Check out if you are able to understand the conversation easily. That will help with the listening part of it.

2) Read the newspaper loudly everyday. Makes you familiar with the language.

3) Practise the mock tests and exercises at least 50 times. Thats essential.

Last but not the least, the score is not very important. All they need is your score be above the minimum level they have decided. So just because you have 245 and some one else has 295 does not mean that he will be looked at favourably. They don't even consider it.

JUST MAKE SURE YOU GET MOER THAN THE MINIMUM LEVEL THEY HAVE DECIDED.

Hi,
There are books available for preparing toefl along with CD where you have 7to 8 model tests .You could get them at your nearest library or from the bookstores.
You don't need to worry about computer stuff, its easy and you have a small
tutorial to familiarise you with the computer basics .
Do practice tests ,good luck.
