Probably man. Do you still speak with an accent?

This is straight from a dental school's webpage (University of Louisville).

https://louisville.edu/dental/dmd/admission

English Language Proficiency:
Applicants whose native language is not English must submit official TOEFL iBT scores. Preference is given to candidates with a minimum score of 100 and with listening and speaking section scores at 26 or above. The instituiton code for submitting TOEFL scores to the U of L School of Dentistry is 5933. For more information about TOEFL testing, go to: www.ets.org/

But most of the schools are not mentioning anything about TOEFL on their websites.

🙁

I am an internation student who attended highschool (11-12th), and

graduated from 4-year-university.

In this case, do I need to take TOEFL??

It depends on schools. If they mentioned it on their web sites, you need to take the TOEFL.

I came to the States when I was 17. Enough said.

BTW, it doesn't matter whether I have an accent or not since I am not a native speaker.

Even if I can speak English without an accent, I will be still considered as a non-native speaker

Do you still speak with an accent?

I'd call a few schools to ask -- just in case. You did pretty well on RC for the DAT, so I think you should be fine. I really hope you won't have to!

Actually, your question (and AlbinoPolarBear's info from Louisville) makes me wonder a little.

I'm also a non-native speaker (with an accent) but am a U.S. citizen, and double majored degree in English. Now I'm wondering if I need to take the TOEFL because of my accent...

I'm sure most native speakers don't have accents when they talk their native language.

If you can speak English without an accent, you can definitely pull the native speaker thing off. 'Dude, I'm native as it gets'.

Don't quote me on this though, I'm just a random guy on a forum. Call/email the schools to make sure.

How are dental schools supposed to identify if an international applicant speaks with or without an accent?

If you're an international student from a non-english speaking country (primary language is not english), you will probably have to take the TOEFL. non-native speaker, some schools will require you to take the TOEFL.

I'm an international student and I don't have any accent, yet I still had to take the TOEFL (for Minnesota). One's English accent has nothing do with one's requirement to take the TOEFL.

But if you do have an accent, it's a dead give away that english is not your native language, and a TOELF test is in order. That was the point I was trying to make.

Does this apply to U.S. citizens whose native language wasn't English as well?

It never crossed my mind I'd have to take the test (since I didn't when applying to colleges). Looks like I'll have to look up how to register for and take it.

If you're a US citizen, why would you take it? English is the official language of the United States. I didn't use the word native, I said you're likely to take the TOEFL if you're from (a citizen) of a non-English speaking nation.

As far as dental schools are concerned, if you're a U.S., Canadian, British, Australian, etc., citizen you DON'T take the TOEFL.

If you're Chinese, Korean, German, French, etc. (non-English speaking countries), you're likely to take the TOEFL depending on which school you're applying to.

So which schools require the TOEFL? I know Minnesota and Louisville are two of those schools that are likely to ask for your TOEFL scores. Most if not all private schools like Columbia, Harvard, UOP, NYU, BU don't ask for the TOEFL.

YoonS,
if you completed all 4 years of your undergraduate studies in the US, the school will waive the TOEFL requirement..It was one of my concerns as well and i called some schools and that is what they told me

Don't worry too much. I also called some school since I am similar situation as yours (I went to undergrad and grad school with English speaking courses plus I had same score on RC as you), they told me I don't have to take the TOEFL.
