Hi everyone,

I need to pass Microbiology, Pharmacology, Physiology and a class about Experimental Biology. It's not looking good, having been passing mock exams. My exams start in 2 weeks. Also I'm in the middle of a break-up. No brain power to study, no brain power to talk to my very upset SO, no brain power for family Christmas drama. Any suggestions for concentration and compartmentalizing? I cannot fail! Thanks!

Are you a medical student? If yes then sketchy sketchy sketchy will cover micro and pharm

Yes joint-degree, pandemic, weird schedule. I have an appointment in early February... Thanks a lot, I actually hadn't thought about sketchy. Also helps a little with physio. Sounds exactly like what I need right now since blunt memorizing and Pomodoro which normally work well for me are totally ineffective. Also reminds me to use Anki a lot more. Any more techniques, especially about focus/concentration? Thanks

I think an important part about learning how to concentrate is to learn how to properly unconcentrate. It sounds like you’re under an immense level of stress right now with just life. Asking yourself to handle all of your personal matters by compartmentalizing them may really hurt you in the short and long term. Take 1 day to talk with your SO. Take a day to talk to your family and celebrate Christmas. Take a personal day to do what you want to do. That leaves 11 days instead of 14, but 11 days of intense focus >>> 14 days of mediocre focus + continuing personal drama.

Go to the favorite library at your school if possible. Bring nothing besides plain iced coffee, water, and a laptop (leave your phone if possible. Even better if you can print notes so don’t get distracted by internet). Choose to sit in wood/metal chairs rather than a couch. Review the material in 15 minute chunks, but make sure to write everything that you don’t know down on paper by hand. Keep going through the notes until you know enough to not be anxious about the exam.

Disclaimer; not a med student atm but went to a fairly rigorous undergrad school and came to like the routine of studying for final exams to such an extent that it’s one of the things I’m looking forward to ib med school:
