Is this schedule for first semester freshman year too easy?

1. Organic Chemistry
2. Biol 101
3. Econ 110
4. Spanish 110

I'll be involved in other activities as well and don't want to overload myself, but is this couresload too easy for starting off as premed?

That's it? You might have some problems down the road.

I might save the O-Chem for the next semester. You still need to work out the kinks in your study habits and transition to college during that first semester. If you have the work ethic, go for it. If not, take my advice.

How do people manage to take ochem in their freshman year? Isn't genchem the prereq?

I assume you did fine in gen. chem? I'd personally want to wait on O-chem, but you do have a good and fairly light schedule, so I think that it's manageable.

At my school it goes:
GenChem (combined with Pchem if you get an AP5 and pass the dept pretest)
Orgo1 (Optional advanced lab)
Summer
Orgo2
Pchem (I guess that's technically GenChem2? Anyway, you get to skip this if you took the hard Sem1 chem.)

You get 2 credits towards your major reqs if you take the adv. GenChem, but only 1 credit towards graduation reqs (it's 1 credit/class)

While I like this system in some ways, it does kind of suck to have summer break between orgo 1 and 2. They give a test the first week of class to make sure you've reviewed everything from last year, and then you jump right in!

I came to this page thinking I was going to see like Bio 101, Basket Weaving 101, and Yoga or something, but then I saw this 😱 I would have died as a freshman with that schedule. I would caution against it.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys! Do you have any suggestions on how to make it more challenging? I figured I probably shouldn't add another science course since I already have 2. I failed to mention that I'll actually be taking both Bio 101 and 102 in the same semester (the final for Bio 101 will be in October and the final for 102 will be in Dec). Foreign language is a required class, and econ is just a class I'm interested in, since I'm thinking about majoring in that.
Is this too easy if I want to be a competitive applicant to med schools and medical internships? Should I add another science class or something?

lol wut?

You realize 0kazak1 was being sarcastic and basically everyone else said it was good or too hard. You are already at 16+ credits and you want to add more? I would just do this, or less, first semester and see how it goes. Even if you had AP Bio and AP Chem and know spanish fluently already. College takes some getting used to so I would take it slow.

Don't add more. Take your free time, if you have any, and meet new people. College is not all about hard work.

How the hell do you take biology I and II in the same semester?

a lot of schools have accelerated classes. I know at my school you can take two math classes in one term. but its 5 days a week, 2 hours a day, and an unholy amount of work.

Oh lol...I didn't see DAPI and mehc012's posts, but thanks for all the replies. It's good to get some perspective.

I've taken 19 or 20 credits every single semester. Come on, buddy, add some more courses!

Seriously though, how is it possible to take orgo your first semester of college?

I used AP credit to get out of Gen Chem I & II and took O Chem I first semester. I got a D on my first exam. Although I ended up doing well, I agree with earlier posters that OP may want to take a semester to iron out quality study habits (I still haven't 🙄) before tackling O Chem.

Did you make this thread for the sole purpose of telling people your schedule and that it's going to be easy for you?

@TheMightSmiter,

Of course not. It's unfortunate that you got the idea. I wasn't sure if competitive med school applicants start out with something harder. This thread's sole purpose is to get some perspective on my schedule and whether or not I need to change it up a bit. Nothing else.

I would highly recommend not taking Ochem during freshman year. Take general chemistry instead.

It is much more important that you have a high GPA, not that you take challenging course loads. Taking Ochem during freshman year is likely only going to hurt your GPA.

I remember someone said that as long as you are a full time student, you are in good shape. I think you have plenty for your first semester. Test it out!

I took o-chem I my first semester of college with a few other science courses (analytical chemistry and calc III) because I placed out of gen chem. It wasn't that bad and by no means was I studying all the time. It was just annoying because analytical chemistry and o-chem both had long and tedious labs.

I'm still not that sure why o-chem has such a bad rep amongst pre-meds. I didn't think it was necessarily harder than gen chem, just a little bit different. And a good grasp of fundamentals in that class makes it very manageable as it cuts down on the amount of rote memorization compared to other science classes, especially bio classes (I'm looking at you cell biology and biochemistry). Personally, I thought that physics II (em+optics) was considerably more difficult.

5 days a week, 2 hours a day for a 4 1/2 month semester? I'd die, come back to life and then die again.

Its looks fine. You might want to replace organic chemistry.
