Hello

I was wondering if this week would be too late to apply to programs?
I'm a Caribbean IMG, unfortunately had to delay my CK. Scores are decent. I'm ready to submit my stuff. I just don't know if it's worth spending money if theres no point or having a record of applying that apparently might affect next years application(?).

I'd love to have some honest feedback. Freida has a lot of cut off dates as Dec 31, but I'm not sure if the programs go by those.
Should I maybe apply to a select few programs?

Thank you!

Man, you have put yourself in a really bad place.

On the one hand, yes, it's wicked late and you're unlikely to get much love (not none, just not a lot).

On the other hand, next year you'll have added another flag (yellow, not really red, but still) to your app since the assumption (no matter what you choose to do this year) will be that you failed to match since you're a year out. There's nothing in ERAS that tells programs that you've applied before so don't let that be an issue for you. But it will be obvious that you didn't match your senior year no matter what you do.

So my advice would be to just go for it. Apply to a bunch (30-50, the typical recommendation for 100+ for Carib IMGs is probably overkill in your case since you're going to run into diminishing returns pretty quickly) and then cross your fingers for the SOAP. Try to match this year one way or another.

Also...and this should go without saying but probably doesn't...the above advice depends on your specialty of choice. If you're looking at Peds, FM, IM, Psych or Path, the above is legit. If you're looking at anything even remotely competitive, forget it (this year and perhaps forever).

the end of october is really really late…apply but realize you are going to get very few interview…you will need to be proactive and see if there are any last minute cancellations (happens a lot in january when everyone is getting tired of interviews) so you can squeeze some more invites in…

and if you are looking at anything other than FM, Psych, Peds and IM (and the last 2 even then may be difficult), make plans to SOAP and find something to do to help your application for next year.

and define "decent"? >240,250 and you may get some love with a late app, but the men or below….not so much.

good luck

Thank you guys! Really appreciate it.
I have applied to about 40 Family Med programs and will be proactive.

Hoping for the best.

BTW what does everybody mean by be proactive? I mean other than getting a high USMLE score, good LORs, and apply to programs what else can he do? Will calling the program and saying "I want to go here" really make a difference?

Ya Basically, calling programs and showing interest. For me it hasn't really worked But some do get lucky. Its hit or miss. And maybe the ones that do get lucky would've been offered an interview either way. Who knows.

So what happened? I am also a late applicant this year. Was it worth applying?
