Hi, what is the deadline for ERAS submission?

Am I at a disadvantage for not having applied now? How much? Can/should I still apply? I am average overall. Thanks.

Assuming this is a serious post, you are WAY late.

Many interviews have been offered by now. Of the places that haven't offered interviews yet, the applications have been preselected by step scores and grades, only awaiting the deans letters. You should check AM.com for places that have already offered invites, for an idea of which places likely have no more spots to offer to interview. Apply EVERYWHERE else.

I mean, I would say you're *obviously* at a disadvantage (most of us turned it in over a month and a half ago). And if your stats are "average" as you say, then there's definitely no reason to believe that any of the programs that have already started giving out interviews would extend you an offer at this point. Even the programs that give out interviews really late in the game have started printing out apps and putting together files for their committee members to review, like previous poster said, just awaiting MSPE's to stick in there. So... yeah you're at a big disadvantage. But the way I see it is, if you *don't* apply you are guaranteed not to get in anywhere; whereas if you at least go ahead and apply, there's a chance you might get in somewhere! If you're sure you want to do radiology (which maybe you're not considering the delay in your ERAS), why wait another year?

I really wanted to make sure this was right for me. But at this point I may only be able to get into programs that wouldn't be my top choice if I had applied earlier. Should I then take a year off, improve my application, and then shoot for the gold? I'm looking for a program heavily focused on teaching and research and innovative radiology.

Also what you're saying assumes there's no penalty for applying and not matching if you apply in later years. Is this true?

In general the chances of matching are best the first time around (as a senior medical student applying). The problem is your application is late for this season, so you may not get many interviews this year.

Next year, assuming you do an internship and you get your application in much earlier, you may get a good amount of interviews but will be hindered by the logistics of balancing time off from clinical responsibilities to go to attend your interviews.

There is no real penalty in applying this year, other than the money lost if you don't get in. You can also try next year. (Thats 2 chances to match).

If you sit out and wait until next year, you only have that one chance to match. What will you do, the next year, if you don't match?

If you don't get in at first all is not lost. Radiology residencies have been known to take (or steal?) stellar candidates from other residencies. During my residency I have worked with an ex-ENT, ex-NS, ex-GS, 2 ex-peds residents.

In a profession that many believe is generally heading down the crapper, Radiology STILL remains one of the best fields left in medicine. Good luck!

If I do not match or do not apply this year, I could do an internship, research, MPH, etc.

Now if I am a program, and I am getting an application I saw the year before that I did not interview and now is essentially the same application with 3 months of internship, or 3 months of research, or 3 months of a MPH completed, will I interview that candidate?
Compare this to I am a program that is getting an application for the first time 3 months after graduation.

I am neither stellar nor going to be applying for another specialty, so radiology can't steal me from another specialty. In fact I would think that worsens my overall chances.

Could you point me to the AM thread that shows available interviews still left? If it's really true that most places have already picked out who they are interviewing, is applying this year even worth considering?

Scut Monkey ,

Go to the med student forum on auntminnie.com. You'll quickly find a list of all the programs that have put out at least one wave of interview offers. I think it's about 80-90 programs so far. Compare this with the 180+ programs that offer rad residency as found on FREIDA.
