hey guys, im new to this site and was reading some of the threads and read some stuff about being too late...or less chances because we're late???? does that mean doing the DAT early october puts me at a real disadvantage in terms of admissions?????? Also i wanted to know how a failed course would affect my chances of getting in, its one failed course....other than that i have only got 3 marks less than a B- in my 3 years at university and have a 3.5 overall GPA and a 3.4 science GPA....any advice wud be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'm a U of R graduate, my counselor told me that it does not matter when you apply... early applications get looked at, so do October and November applications. As long as you don't apply in December, or late November, your golden. Dental schools do no give anyone spots before this time, they merely give interviews. You have just as good a chance of getting accepted as the OCD kids that apply on the opening date. I will finish my application by late September. APPLY!!! Why believe these kids? It seems that everyone is so competitive that they easily discourage everyone so its one less competitive person. None of these kids are accepted and I am sure most of them are BSing their real DAT scores because they are being self deceptive. Go with it, and confidence is key. Good luck and dont let these "studenthopetobedoctors" discourage you.

Just keep in mind that it once you apply to AADSAS, it takes them 4-8 weeks to process your application and get it sent out to your designated schools. So if you submit you application today, it COULD be as late as mid-Novemebr before your schools get your application! And if that is the case, then all of the Sept. Oct. and November interview slots are filled... so you'll be competing with A LOT of other applicants for a spring interview spot. That is is advantage of applying early.

Now, keep in mind that you don't have to wait to apply until after you take the DAT! Have you written your personal statement yet? That is what really takes a long time.... as it is not something that you can rush.

As far as the comments from FutureDocBerg... and for the rest of the website.... Use this website as a resource.... it is not meant to scare you or discourage you. If you read the threads, look for the reoccuring themes (i.e. Destroyer rocks for Organic, and this year, the QR section is harder than h*ll) and go with that. You'll occasionally see a frusterated applicant venting (as is FutureDocBerg) and you just have to look past them. This website has helped a lot of people, and the majority of people are wiling to offere advice to others whether it is on the app process or just helping them solve a problem.

Good luck!🙂

When you say it takes 4-8 weeks for them to process and send out your app, do you mean it takes 4-8 weeks to verify your GPA and THEN send out your app? If I send in my transcript a month ago and send in my app today, would it still take 4-8 weeks to process and send out? Sorry, I'm a little confused...

the only reason i don't want to apply until after my DAT, is because I don't want to waste $1000 applying to 15 unis through AADSAS and then have bad DAT scores which most likely wont let me get in.....also can someone answer my question about my chances because of that failed course. Thanks.

Good words glkdds. SDN is an incredible resource....if you use it right.

Here is my timeline of application stuff to give you an idea of what to expect.

1. AADSAS application submitted 7/30/07
2. Application verified by AADSAS 8/18/07
3. Application mailed to schools 8/30/07
4. Application noted as received by schools 9/05/07 to current (some still say they haven't gotten to it yet)
5. First secondary application arrived 9/10/07.
6. Time to fill out secondary and mail 9/13/07.
7. Currently waiting for them to review secondary and for interviews. I have one interview right now but the only thing that was open was for November.

Just remember that alot of your correspondence is by snail mail and that it is very difficult to ever really know where your application is or will be. Also, every time you mail something it takes a while for them to get to it because they receive such a high quantity of material every week. Docberg is right that you don't need to freak yourself out because of this process, but you should get on top of your application asap.

Also, your single failed course is not the end of the world. What IS important is your grades, experience, DAT scores, and how many schools you applied to. I withdrew from 2 courses during college and I think everything will be fine.

Hope that helps, good luck.

It seems as though verifying the application isn't what takes the longest, it's AADSAS actually sending the scores out to schools....grrr 😡

Lindell12a...

AADSAS is processing a lot of applications. It is more than just calculating your GPA... it is veifying your transcripts, verifying letters of reccommendation, etc.

Dannyd123 was very lucky with his application being pushed through so quickly!

They don't verify your letters of recommendation, those are sent in as expressed on the application and sent to schools.
