I am majoring in biological sciences but don't know what to specialize in because i don't know what the differences are among these:

cell biology
molecular biology
biochemistry
microbiology

They all seem interesting to me but I can't decide. I wouldn't want to pick a hard one because it will screw up my already low 3.10 pharmcas GPA.

What about neuroscience? That one seems to stand out the most but is it the hardest one? Isit mostly the nervous system tied in with psychology?

What's going to work out better for your choice(s) or Pharm school? Are you looking to go to a school that requires Biochemistry? If so, take that. I thought most Pharm schools required Micro; I also thought a degree in Biology would require a class in Micro.

My daughter's option is this: she has to take Biochemistry as a pre-req for her preferred Pharm school, BUT--- she only needs Biochem I and Biochem II..... no labs. So she's taking the classes and skipping the labs, since she's already got a degree in Pre-Professional Science but was missing the Biochem component.

If you haven't taken the PCAT yet, you might want to ask which of those classes will help you out more, in terms of the PCAT, and also in terms of your Pharm school work. I'm leaning toward Biochem, but I'm not the best person to ask about this.

If you don't wanna pick a hard one, then go with pure bilogical sciences. Biochemistry is a lot harder than pure bilogical sciences....

If you arent concerned with getting a bachelor's it really doesnt matter. Pick the one with the coolest advisor and then just take whatever pre-reqs you actually need. Many colleges will try to pressure you into taking classes you dont really need if you arent going for a bachelor's.

I would look at the requirements for each major. I don't know if it will be the same at your school, but biochem at UA requires harder physics, more math, and p.chem (all hard classes). But microbio requires a lot easier classes. Look at the descriptions of classes you would be required to take and figure out which ones sound most interesting to you.

Cell-self explanatory
Molecular-molecules and genetics
Biochem-self explanatory
Microbio-viruses, bacteria, etc.

Biochem much harder than the other three. I thought microbio was harder than cell but everyone is different!

Microbiology is the easiest one. I took it last semester, got an A. I agree with others that biochem is harder. I have never taken biochem, but I have been reading the textbook. It is not easy to digest at all.
Good luck!

It depends on the person. Quite frankly, I'd pick the one with the fewest overall classes or the one with the most pharm prereqs, the rest is a crapshoot depending on what has concepts hardest for you to grasp. I don't think one would look any better than another in terms of concentration.

For my biology degree I was required to take all of those classes. I think he was asking about a BS in one of those specific areas. Once you take the individual classes, you will get a better idea on where your interest lies. If you just want to see what helps you with pharmacy, then choose microbiology. I think Molecular Biology would be the most interesting and will get you further if you want to go on into research.

It'll make understanding drug targets a little more applicable to the subjects you'd be familiar with if you took that route. Of course neuroscience may give a good background into drug targets when studying psych drugs, nerve disorders, etc. Molecular works if you look into gene therapy/DNA based meds. Basically, in the end, I'd think it depends on your interests because there'd be overlap into pharma in anyone of the selected concentrations.
