Hello all,

I took a year off between my third and fourth years to do a Doris Duke research fellowship. The institution awarded me a certificate in research from the graduate school. I'm wondering how to code all of this stuff in ERAS.

Should I list the Doris Duke year in the "education" or "medical education" section in addition to listing it as an "experience" (research)? And should I list the certificate somewhere? Granted it's not a degree but it is a formal certificate program that was completed during the year.

Lastly, does my research year necessitate me to list in the "misc" section that I've extended/interrupted my medical education? I'd rather not check yes for that box because the connotations seem negative for interrupting my education and I don't want this to get me filtered out?

Any advice?

List it as a research experience.

I would not list the "certificate" anywhere, assuming that everybody who did the DD fellowship gets one.

Usually you will mention that your training was interrupted. You will then get an explanation box to fill in, where you write "completed 1 year Doris Duke Research Fellowship" -- which let's you list it in two places and is definitely not a negative.

Great. Thanks for the info. I was thinking some PDs might filter out people who had an interruption in their training but that would be silly because many people do PhDs, MPHs, etc.

Regarding the certificate, I think its' specific to my institution - it's a "certificate in clinical research." I feel weird listing it as a degree - perhaps I'll just include it the comment section for the research experience.

Exactly-- I'm in the same boat (though not DD). It's a Research Experience, and it's an interruption to your medical education. Not a degree, and not training.

And it's definitely not viewed negatively.

I plan on getting my white coats specially tailored. Hell, that's why they're long, right-- more room to list one's CV off in prose.

Also, the business cards I plan on getting printed up the first day of internship to hand out to patients/families will ensure everyone knows.

A little early for me, as I am just about to start my program, but should I do the same on ERAS to show I participated in the NIH's CRTP?
