Tooth ID EXAM?!!!!!!!!!

Hey everyone,

I'm just getting ready for my tooth ID exam on the full dentition this friday and was wondering if anyone here had any good materials I could use to study (i.e. websites, doc's, ppts) that can help prepare me.

The exam is going to take us through each tooth one by one, showing 5 different views of real human teeth per tooth. We then have to ID the tooth along with various landmarks. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks😀

Thanks, this is a great site but I don't understand the numbering system. Is there anyway to fix it so that I am tested on Universal only?

oh hah, its on the fbi number system. Quadrant is the first number. Teeth number is the second and is figured by how far away from midline.

so, upper right quad, 1; Upper left, 2. Lower left quad, 3. Lower right quad, 4. For teeth. Central, 1; lateral, 2; Canine, 3; PM1, 4; PM2, 5; Molar 1, 6; Molar 2, 7; molar 3, 8.

Thus, a mandibular right first pre molar or universal # 28, would be 44. its actually much better than our universal system.

It is a small-ish thing, but I am surprised that your dental school didn't go over the FDI numbering. Which school are you at? Also, I just had my first tooth ID test at Loma Linda, and I would say getting some real teeth and going over them with other students is a great way to prepare.

yeah im gonna have to agree. FDI, Palmer, and universal numbering systems are taught at our school. Of course, we, like all other inefficient, errorprone americans, use universal.

UCLA. I was going through my DA text and saw the overview of FDI numbering. We are not using FDI because it in impractical.

its actually much more practical. the reason we dont use it here in the us is because of insurance companies.

Just think about it, the first number denotes quadrant and second the tooth. Centrals are always 1, laterals are always 2, canines 3, etc.

I'm not sure if there has been a study on number of errors of fdi using countries vs. universal, but i'd venture to say its less in countries that use fdi.

No, no, no, you misunderstood me. I totally agree with you that the FDI is more efficient with regards to how efficient it is; I understand it totally now. By impractical, I mean to say that dentists, D-assistants, D-hygenists, D-specialists, and D-professors throughout the country use the universal system so it would be impractical for me to use the FDI system in my practice while all the other people I am working with are using the universal system.

Hah. This thread is funny. Denticus, I can't BLEEVE you aren't fluent in FDI!! I thought UCLA was supposed to be one of those "good" schools. 🙄
