I was just contemplating whether or not I should address some of my peers about the decline prestige in our profession by way of some literature I composed this morning. This afternoon, I went to CNN and this article popped write in front of me of best jobs in America. I was surprised at what I found. Keep in mind, last year we were the 13th best job/career in America.

I'll let you see for yourself where we are ranked, it will surprise you but, lets just say, I better get started on my article

Doth my eyes decieve me, or has pharmacy completely fallen of the list?

the fact 2009 list ranks pharmacist as 13th best job with 22% growth in the future to it falling off the list in 2010 should tell you it's an inconsistent and inaccurate list at best.

Maybe they took it off the list b/c the shortage is gone and the growth is now at a negative percentage?

i dont think its all gloom and doom

as long as one is marketable (residency?) and willing to move, they'll be jobs

Nah..I think they took it off because evaluators read the "CVS Sucks" threads on SDN. It has to be.

I wouldn't be so sure. I believe residency and willing to move will help. But it's by no means a guaranty that you'll find a job.

yikes

what do you think is the solution? is it just stop opening the diploma mills?

Goodness, is it so bad that a residency trained pharmacist who is willing to relocate cannot find a job?! Or did you mean this in a more philosophical sense; their are no guaranties in life?

Hospitals just aren't looking for pharmacists right now. Every hospital is looking to cut cost. Residency training doesn't mean it's a shoe in for a clinical job. Some new jobs being created are Critical Care & ID positions. Of course those require PGY2.

Completion of PGY1 will give you a better chance of course. It's all about being competitive and being better than your peers. There are a lot of pharmacists with fantastic clinical background. But most lack the financial knowledge of clinical pharmacy operations. So knowing your numbers and being able to justify your salary will put you ahead of your competition.

Fixed...

what recommendation do you have for newer grads? aside from residency. get another degree? quit and go to med school? 😀

just wondering

There are several different types of Nurses: CRNA, DON for Nursing Homes etc..and different Physicians on the list: PCP, Anesthesiologist, Psychiatrist, OB/GYN...

Are you blind?

geez bloody hell man...pharmacist is not even in top 100...><

The list is stupid and pointless. Jobs like PAs are in high demand BECAUSE of the lack of physicians and ability to do a bunch of the work at less cost. Excluding pathologists and the super saturated markets, you can get a job pretty friggin fast as a doc. It is all pretty subjective.

I've always heard the same thing about pathologists. Why is this they case? are they just not needed in high numbers in hospitals?

Article like above and bullsh$$$ bls.gov website make naive students jumping into the profession with high hopes of landing a job once graduating ... Sighs

I hope you finally realize and believe what I was saying before about the saturation of this career and the lack of jobs out there.

Its Z is in charge of HIRING people in many different hospitals across the country so what he says is the fact.

I don't do the actual hiring.. I interview..and make recommedations. But it is true about different hospitals across the country.

I don't believe it. I mean that in a literal way - it just doesn't match what I have seen. A resident-trained pharmacist who is willing to relocate cannot find a job? I doubt that very much. I think what Z meant - and if not he can correct me - is that no one is guaranteed a job.

Our field is not so bad that the highest trained members cannot find jobs even with relocating. That's just people's fears - it's not reality. Will it be? Maybe, but I have my doubts.

question for you: are you a pharmacist yet? if you are, have you been looking for a job yet during this year ? If not, then you better believe...and be prepared for a bad future ahead..

How many unemployed pharmacists?

I think we're right at the tipping point. Look at it this way.. there are approximately 50,000 pharmacy students in the US. So unless something drastic happens, I just don't see there will be 50,000 pharmacist jobs in the US next 4 years... or 12,000 pharmacist position come next summer.

You are scarying me! 🙁 Maybe I should have been a business major instead. 🙄

Right, because

  1. Business majors have jobs FALLING onto their laps.
  2. There were practically no lay-offs in the business/finance-sector when the economy went down the drain.

Nah... PharmD/PGY1/MBA or PharmD/PGY1 & 2 should be almost guaranty a job.

First baby boomer turns 65 in the next year or two. We will be fine people. At least, I can say that since I already have a job lined up.

Hey tceh dood...did you see this play? It's the funniest play of the year!

Baby boomer doesn't mean much when # of jobs created < # of applicants (principle: demand<supply)

I'm officially off the Tuberville bandwagon. Second game in a row that the opposing team scored on an onside kick. And yes, our special teams coach is our head coach. At least, Tech is above A&M in the standings (second to the last place)!

A&M is last in the division. Well, y'know...we only played 1 conference game. So 0-1 is all.

Projected pharmacist supply by 2020: 290,000
Projected patient > 65 by 2020: 60-80 million
Projected patient > 85 by 2020: 10-20 million

LOL....what a joke! yes, sure...believe in these projections.

Umm I will. I also will believe that these old people will demand the services of a pharmacist since 60% will be living with chronic diseases, 30% will be obese, and 50% will have arthritis.

That is ALOT of chronic diseases. I think we will be fine. After all our patients will need more or more medications. 😀

Yeah, not sure what happened there. Too much studying I suppose.

At first glance, this chart may make it seem like pharmacy will be an oasis of opportunity over the coming years but things are not always as they seem. Remember, healthcare is a huge expense and one that could possibly sink the country as more Americans become medicare eligible. The government and private insurance alike will look for every possible way to control this cost. Pharmacy is one likely area as it is seen by many as an peripheral part of healthcare. As an example, this could take the form of heavily decreased reimbursements (as whats happening in Ontario) or a greater reliance on cost saving mail order facilities ( as whats already happening in the US). Of course, I don't have a crystal ball but in situations dealing with the economy, it helps to "follow the money".

Then what was the Leiman Bros about?

Are you expecting a bunch of old people to die soon? Which projection do you have a problem with?

You're truly a bookworm who just is literally ******ed , knowing nothing but the facts and figures listed by the book. I don't care how many millions baby boomers will be...that doesn't matter. What truly matters = the reality. Look at the reality and see how f* up it is. The project graph you had there is from 2010 to 2050...so you're telling me you're gonna spend the next 4 yrs in pharmacy school to prepare to land a job within 40 yrs? Wtf? What you really want is these baby boomers to age NOW....I repeat NOW! so you can fill prescriptions and pay your bills NOW, not in 40 yrs.

I can't wait to see you graduate and struggle in the job market....I'll be very happy to see that....a brand new grad who can't pay his own student loan ...lol....wait a minute...there's always a job available but it's called "blow" J....you wanna do it? PM me when u're in desperate I can refer you to other people for that job

Ouch. What have I ever done to you?

I doubt I will struggle; I have little doubt that I will be able to land a job with any company that I work for during school; I hate to sound arrogant, but I have an excellent work ethic and I am not tied to any particular location. If I didn't work or wasn't willing to move I may feel differently.

I think it's better that they finally took it off the list. Now maybe they will stop opening up way too many schools and deter those who don't have their mind in the right place from perusing the field. The profession's economy needs to recalibrate anyhow.

Yeah, because there's so many 64-70 year olds working in entry pharmacy jobs at Rite Aids and CVSs, etc... 🙄

The glut of filled pharmacy jobs is not due to the so-called baby-boomers. It's due to these Street-Corner Schools of Pharmacy seeing green - and packing the field to maximum capacity.
