This is actually not surprising and not so useful stat. The reason Filipinos are number 2 considering that we have less populations than Mexico, Pakistan and Russia is that we have an American style of education and majority of Filipinos dream of practicing in the US. Being a former US colony helps with this aspiration. There will come a time in the future where we will slip to number 3 or 4 as there are very fewer med school applicants. Most younger students in the Philippines nowadays want to be a nurse to get the hell out of the country faster.

Also if you look at the list, there are small islands in the Caribbean like Grenada (site of SGU), Dominica (site of Ross), and Monseratt (former site of AUC before they moved to St. Martin). These are mostly US citizens getting their MD's from Caribbean med schools.

i don't understand the attraction of carribean med schools?

indians are number one because they have a huuge population. my friends who have become IMGs say that many of their contemporaries are indians. see the HUGE discrepancy between the amount of people belonging to one then to two? :hardy:

The popularity of Caribbean schools is based on their system. They parallel curriculum of American schools plus they prep you better for USMLE. They only do 2 years at the most in the island for basic sciences and they they do last 2 years (3rd and 4th) clinical in various US hospitals. These are usually owned by corporations (some Americans). Since they are doing their 2 year clerkships in the US, it is easier for them to get LOR's from US attending and they graduate and match at the same time with American students.
The disadvantage is the cost as they cost about the same (some more expensive) as US schools. Only 3 of them have federal loans as most private lenders have pulled out due to the US credit crisis.
Based on the population of Indians, they are actually underrepresentd:laugh: However CHina also has a huge population but it's the language barrier that keeps them underrepresented.
