I know that previous attempts to make "Top 5 or 10" lists of general surgery programs have fizzled. I think the problem is that there are just too many programs out there, and some people think "Top 5" means "most family friendly" while others think "best research" while still others think "most desirable." SO... for the sake of argument, I wanted to compile a makeshift list of Top 5 programs in the MIDWEST based purely on ACADEMIC REPUTATION, though I realize that there are multiple factors that go into deciding on a program (so please don't point out that obvious fact 🙄 )
Everyone's comments are appreciated...

Here goes (in no particular order):
1. Northwestern
2. Washington U (Barnes)
3. U Chicago
4. Minnesota
5. Michigan

Agree? Disagree? Should Iowa be on the list? What about Mayo?

1. WashU
2. Mayo
3. UMich
4. UofC
5. NW

I thought Indiana was pretty decent and up there for the midwest... dunno. Thoughts?

Mayo would be great if you want to graduate without ever seeing a gunshot or stab wound.
Ok, Ok, I know they go to Chicago for a month to get some trauma experience, but still...

1. U of Michigan
2. U of Chicago
3. U of Washington
4. Northwestern
5. Rush

again, my humble opinion only...i'm basing a lot of this on selectivity, feedback from residents, attendings, my own experience as a sub-I.

what about Loyola?

U Michigan
Wash U
UChicago
UWisconsin
Northwestern

I would say Indiana, CCF and UMinnesota also belong toward the top of the list based on academic reputation.

Mayo's a great place for a fellowship, not necessarily for a residency. (the good stuff goes to fellows)

Go to the program that will make you only want to quit an average of less then 3 times a year. That being said for "GENERAL" surgery training (of those programs mentioned):

1. Wash U.-solid
2. Loyola-most complete program in Chicago
3. UofC-if you can tolerate it
4. Michigan-trauma?
5. NW-but continues to improve
6. Mayo-Peds? Trauma? but all the insulinomas you can eat
7. Cleveland Clinic-go there for a GI or CT fellowship
8. Wisconsin-trauma?

Rush-not in the same academic league as the above but probably trains better general surgeons then NW or UC.

I would disagree with Loyola being on the list, but to each his own, I guess. Academically they are not in the same league as the others mentioned.

I find it a little ironic that the OP is so gung ho about academic excellence but isn't willing to travel to attain it. Each to their own, I guess.
