This is just for curiousity. Does anyone know how someone becomes one of those "rated top-doctors in 2017" that you see in like every doctor's office? It seems like every doctor is a "top-doctor."
 
It depends on the source of the award. Most areas have some sort of magazine that will have a "Top Doc" award, generally by specialty. For this, they poll the doctors in the area to list or vote for those who they think should win. Others, e.g. Castle Connolly are more opaque with their methodology. Still others are simply a bought award, that is you pay them to be listed in the directory and you're a "top doc."
 
It is primarily word of mouth and reputation, and the list grows every year. It is not a meaningful designation (there are no set criteria or metrics), but it is certainly better to be on the list in your town than not in the list. I have been on the Best Docs list for my city since 2007.
