Hi, I went to an avg med school in midwest, got >230 on step1 and a little higher then that on step2, no aoa but year2 and 3 honors, 1st author publications, abstracts....

I am from Michigan and applied to
1. uof michigan
2. northwestern
3. uof chicago
4. mass general
5. cleveland clinic
6. case western
7. wayne state
8 mayo
9. beaumont
10. henry ford

this is in no particular order, and i got interviews so far everywhere but MGH and UofC.

I am wondering if you guys would consider these to be the top programs in the midwest. Did I leave anything out. If you notice most of my programs are within 4-5 hrs of MI, and that is kind of where I wish to be.

Also why am I not getting UofC and MGH, dean's letter is out already. Any advice for interviews?

At this point I am leaning towards UofM, NWU, CCF, CWRU. How would you guys rank these, advantages, disadvantages of these programs, call (NWU q5?!), fellowships, living environment (i already know about uofm).

Thanks,

Ok anyone out there,

can you guys comment on advantages vs disadvantages of U of Michigan, CWRU, Cleveland Clinic, or Northwestern IM residency

How about University of Wisconsin. I think it should rank higher than several of the ones you mentioned. Its more of a 7 hour drive to Michigan though.

Hey PCN,

Considering that I applied to pretty much the same programs you did last year and gave the process A LOT of thought, I'd have to rank the midwest programs as follows:

UofMich
UofChicago
Mayo
Northwestern
Case Western
CCF
(sorry, don't know anything else about your other midwest programs)

And I agree w/ the previous post that the UofWisconsin is definitely worth a visit as well as UofIndiana. Both better than CCF ("do your residency at CASE and your fellowship at CCF").

Personally, I struggled a lot with my top three (UMich, UChicago, Mayo) but am quite happy w/ my choice. All three would be great places to train. As far as details about the programs listed, I hate to do any school bashing on this forum, so if you wanted to hear my 3rd cent, just PM me.

One notable omission, unless you don't count Missouri as part of Midwest, is the Wash U/BJH program. To put things in perspectives, I think U of Michigan, U of Chicago and Wash U are by far the three strongest programs in the Midwest. Michigan and Wash U are actually pretty similar in program size, quality, academic reputation, and fellowship placement; and they are probably slightly ahead of Chicago, which is a much smaller program at a smaller hospital. Michigan and Wash U are also slighly more academic-oriented than Chicago (U of C provides more rotation at off-site community hospitals, and has more graduates, thought still by no means close to a majority, entering primary care).

The next tier of programs in the Midwest would probably include Northwestern, CWRU, Mayo, and Vandy. Of these programs, CWRU probably has a better reputation in academic/basic science research, while Mayo has, as expected, far better reputation in clinical works/clinical research. Though their fellowship programs are still more highly sought after, the Mayo IM residency program has been becoming more and more popular and competitive in recent years. They just came off one of their most successful matches last year. Northwestern has really nice facilities and provides great clinical training, though their reputation in the academic circle is not as strong as probably CWRU or Vandy. Due to their location and facilities, they are, however, probably the most competitive one in this group.

The Cleveland Clinic IM program is actually not as strong as the hospital's reputation would suggest. They are far better known for their fellowship programs (particularly Cards) then their IM program. This is evident in the fact that many fellowship programs (particularly the more competitive ones)in CCF itself don't even take very many of their own IM residents. That really is a vote of no-confidence it's own IM program. However, their facilities are amazing with great resources. I have to point out that I did not end up ranking this program at all after interviewing there.

I am not as familiar with the other programs that you listed. Hope this helps.

I don't think CWRU is not a Mud Western program? How about U of Pittsburgh? Pitt is only a hour away from CWRU. Their NIH research grant rankings are now top ten (beat Case and Mich).

Not to be disrespectful, but I really don't think NIH research grant dollar ranking has direct correlation with how good of a physician you will become. Additionally, at least in my opinion, although this NIH research ranking is important, it is probably a little overrated when fellowship programs decide whether your residency program made you a worthy candidate.

I could be wrong.

Also, please don't misunderstand me, this was not an all-inclusive list of top midwest programs. This is just a list of programs I thought were top and were places where I want to do residency.
