Guys......please list all the pharmacy schools that you think are good in term of academic teaching....Thanks in advance....please help it is very important for me....

thanks a lot........

Holy Cow....Albany is no where on the list......

no prob

is albany the school in the state of ny??

i'm applying to buffalo (which is ranked pretty high), was thinking about albany, but they have some pretty messed up requirements

yeah...albany is in NY.....what is about its requirement? I am thinking of applying for Early Decision to Albany....but now I think I am better not......since I cannot find any info about that school from others.....

when did you apply?

i didnt apply yet, that's the thing

i'm not even sure about this year

i emailed the girl in buffalo and they said if i have everything in by jan it's ok

the thing is, i'm only starting volutneering at a pharmacy right now,so i cant ask for a letter of recomendation from the guy
i need a couple of months

i'm only in my second year of uni, so if i get in this year, it'd be like a bonus

if i was you i'd still apply for albany, dont worry to much (or at all) about the list

are you applying to buffalo???

I am not sure about Buffalo....I still apply for Albany....but won't apply for Early Decision....you know about Early Decision program right?

ok i'm looking at albany's prerequisites right now

i know i dont have the 'microbiology'

i'm not even sure what a heck it is

in my uni, for second year, we have cell bio, genetics, and animal behavious for biology courses

NO microbiology to my knowledge at least

and also what about the 'liberal arts electives' not sure how many i have

i think i MAY be able to have the requisites for this school by the time i finish my 3rd year, not second though

i may phone and ask, since i'm not sure about some of american classes anyway

buffalo dropped like 5 requirements for me cause i was from canada

Microbiology is the study of small living things (e.i. bacteria, viruses)

Liberal arts include History, Arts, Economic, Psychology, Sociology, English...you can see this list at the bottom of the Pre req. column

the uspharm rankings were posted in 1998, alot of things have changed since then. alot of pple ask if those rankings are still valid, i dunno about that, but i would suggest to research individually on each school that you want to attend.... i found that there are only a few schools that people can agree on as being great (ucsf, UIC etc), the rest are good and okay..... there is nothing wrong going to a school not on that list.....

In terms of academic teaching? WTF does that mean? Also, rankings are a bunch of BS. Albany is a very good college of pharmacy as is Buffalo, as in most pharmacy schools across the nation.

still applying, but ucsf is consistently ranked #1 in their pharmacy program.

consistently? by whom? Having 2 "rankings" and saying it's consistent is stupid. They are a great school but they are not by any means the best school in the nation

consistently by us news and world report, a magazine that is quite frequently referred to by many.. don't be hating

Aren't part of those rankings based on how much money the school gets in grants for research projects? And why would that make anyone a better pharmacist?

I really don't think you can rank pharmacy schools objectively, other than board passing rates which aren't used in the US News reports.

There has only been 2 rankings, which were many years apart from each other. Where is the consistency in that?

This is totally an opinion, but my suggestion is to look at rankings, but take them with a grain of salt. I found that upon true consideration of actually attending the "best" ranked schools... it was not the best for me. As much as people might find it hard to believe, you don't have to agree with the rankings. Especially pharmacy, since yeah, a lot of the ranking is impacted by research grants and perception. But in terms of true opportunities, areas of focus, and quality of education, you really need to invest some time figuring out what is the best for you, and not just the best because US news says so. In the end, you are the one who has to go there for 4 years and learn and get the experience, so make sure it is truly the best for your goals and lifestlye. I made a choice that was right for me, despite what rankings dictated I should do, and I could not be happier with my program and the opportunities that I have. I understand why you are interested, and I do not deny it is important to attend a strong institution, but the decision to attend a school should go deeper than adhering to ranking.

well ucsf's board passing rate is practically 99% (visited the school myself).. that's pretty damn good

I think my school is 100%. It's been several years since anyone didn't pass. Any good school should be able to get students through the board exams.

Compared to what? There are over 70 schools in the USA that have a passing rate of 93% or higher. Nova Southeastern University has had a 100% passing rate for 2 or 3 years straight now. That's pretty damn good! Now where are they on that silly list?!!

Yeah, Wisconsin.

Ranked #1 for "Best Party School". Woo!

Go Badgers!

The best school is Wisconsin, btw. Seriously.

I see you are currently in the Pharmacy program at WVU. Any advice you could give me about getting into the program. Rumor has it that it is extremely hard to get into and very few applicants get interviews. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks

i know ucsf is a great school, but i'm not sure if that pass rate is accurate. i spoke to a ucsf alum back in august when i was still working on applications, and she said she receives the passing rates and said that ucsf had one of the lower pass rates on the licensing exams in california.

here is a ranking; however, i'm not sure if you'll be able to find a more recent one

does it really matter though???

i'd think your qualifications and pharmacy shcool marks will dictate the quality of job you have, rather than the school you attend

That's an old ranking list. University of Arizona is number 4, where I'm going right now (undergrad) - it's an amaazing school with wonderful professors if you want to check it out...I just wish it wasn't so tough to get in, I probably won't get to go here.

I hope you realize all the regular posters in the pharmacy forum are laughing at you.

Here, this is what the actual pharmacy students feel about rankings

People are laughing at me because I'm a prepharm student and not an actual pharmacy student although I have much experience with dealing with professors in the college (colloquiums) and know many people in the program at present...I suggest you speak for yourself when insulting others, doesn't exactly add to your creditability.

That's why you're on the outside looking in, right? 😱

I am on the outside of the school; does that mean I can't put in my two cents about a certain school that I have particular knowledge and experience with? 🙄

Hi Mongoos150! I'm a UofA alum (Business/Accounting). I returned to school and have been accepted for the 2010 class at Purdue. I just wanted to agree with you that U of A is an awesome place (even though I spent waaay too much time at Dirtbags instead of at the library back in the day)

I've heard terrific things about the pharmacy program at U of A; Purdue shares the #4 ranking and I can tell you it's just a stellar place to be- I feel so lucky to be learning in such a great environment. I thought about moving back to Az and trying to get in at U of A if Purdue wouldn't have me, but you're right, I thought that even with a 4.0 prereq GPA that U of A has a fairly small class size and I thought the competition would be pretty stiff.

I'd move back to Tucson in a second, I'm originally from Tempe, and I hope to get back out to AZ when I graduate.. Is the new pharmacy building done yet? I was out there a year or so ago for my brother's wedding and it looked like that complex was going to be incredible!

You just never know what might happen for you, I never thought a couple years ago that I'd get acccepted to such a competitive and highly regarded school as Purdue so you never know....just do all you can to be well rounded and keep the grades as high as possible to maximize your chances.

Good Luck and I'll be wishing great things for you..... :luck:

Great to hear from a fellow wildcat! Yes, dirtbags is a time consumer, I'm under 21 but my fraternity (DTD) is right there at Speedway & Cherry - many of my older brothers LIVE there!!! The new research building (the huge one) isn't done, however the new Drachman Hall is finished and looking magnificent. It's mostly offices for undergrads and such, but it all helps. The facilities are huge and state of the art, I would really love to stay here at Arizona.

I actually visited Purdue two summers ago, met with the Dean and was accepted however out of state tuition kept me here. I love the U (although I'm a bit sick of Tucson - did I say a bit?!) and we'll see where things take me. I suppose we're a bit opposite, even though I only lived in Indiana for two years I loved it; I think where you grow up affects where you'd like to live as an adult in terms of wanting/needing change. Tucson is so hot, but the clear skies are lovely. Good luck with your endeavors at Purdue, much of my extended family is in Indiana (both of my parents went to IU - I would be breaking tradition if I went to Purdue!) although IU doesn't offer a pharmacy program, it's too bad such a gorgeous campus in Bloomington won't be available to me. Good luck to you Mary!

Too funny, I've been to many a party at your fraternity house, I don't know how things are anymore but the TG's at DTD used to be big fun back in the liquor and sun soaked 1990's.. 🙂 I'm glad I survived my childhood, I did many things that were really fun but not too smart, however the memories are priceless...hope you're a bit more sensible than I was. Take care and thanks for the trip down memory lane.

I went to Tucson on a business trip a few years ago. Every storefront looked like Taco Bell. How do you tell the buildings apart?

I also got majorly dehydrated. I'm used to living in high humidity. My lips were chapped and I felt hung over after one drink. It doesn't feel hot because it's so dry, but my body let me know.

It's dry, but it's great for the heat. If it was high humidity in the heat I (and everyone else) would literally drown!

I'm not a huge partier, but it's fun, I'm actually an RA at Babcock this next fall (campbell & speedway), it will give me more chances to study.

Hi Dana,

You're right, Tucson is hardly the most attractive city, the buildings are not very diverse, but there are some great things hiding inside those homogeneous "taco bell" exteriors! I'm a native Arizonan, so to me nothing is as beautiful as a Red sunset over a desert scene... so sappy I know! When you grow up in that environment you just learn to adapt and suck down LOTS of water.

I know what you mean though about the different types of heat. I've lived in lots of places, (My husband used to be an air force pilot) and I think that North Carolina's humid summers were harder for me to take than those in AZ, so you definitely have me beat there. Nothing like walking out and having your glasses fog up due to humidity... 🙂

Thanks for all your great posts, I've enjoyed reading them.

Get good grades in OChem and Microbiology to complement a GPA over 3.5, get a PCAT over 80, and read my interview experience I posted from three years ago.

Just throwing in my 1.19756 cents here...

Any school that clicks with you and you click with it is a keeper.
Who gives a f**k about rankings?
Quality education.
Dedication.
...and a competent, caring pharmacist getting spit out at the end.
Voila! That's a good school.

Crisp.

I think people on here get tired of the new thread every week about which schools are ranked the highest, post by people who seem to think that this is the first time anyone has ever asked that question. Not to mention the fact that rankings don't mean anything.
