2. Creighton
3. Arizona
4. Temple
5. Marquette
6. Louisville
7. Buffalo
8. Tufts
9. WVU
10. Tennessee

if you wouldn't mind showing your stats/EC's it would probably make it much easier to give advice

All are good clinical schools, IMO.

GPA/DAT, EC, lovelife:laugh: (might as well spill everything).

It's really hard to give advice without knowing your state residency (and other stats). What are the important factors that you are basing your choices on?

He didn't specify that he wanted advice about trying to get into these schools. He just said any opinions and input about the schools would be appreciated...though if he has researched them really thoroughly, I'm not sure what else he hopes to gain from our input.

Louisville is a great school. Renovated facilities and you start working with patients earlier than most schools. Never been really sure about ASDOH...lots of friends of mine go there and seem happy, but I've always wondered if that curriculum style is the most effective.

Wow, okay! 😱 I wasn't asking for a critique on my post. I was just wondering what you thought of the schools on my list and I wanted to see where everyone else applied to or was planning on applying to. I am a WA resident but buying a house there would be impossible and I don't want to throw my money away on expensive rent. WA requires research too and I have only shadowed. I have a 3.5 overall GPA and by the end of this semester I'll hopefully have a 3.5 Sci GPA. I've been to Tijuana for a charity dental excursion. By the time I apply I will have shadowed for 25 hours. I'm planning on getting 3 different dentists to write me letters of recommendation. I was really just curious about what everyone else thought of my schools and where everyone applied, just looking for general opinions or advice, it never hurts! 🙂 Any input is welcome, thank you!

i think getting 3 dentist to write you LORs is too much. you only need 1 good one.

Really? Is that true? I guess i just thought the more the better? That's good to know though, thanks.

How can 3 dentists write letters after only 25 hours? Good list though.

Don't apply to WVU unless you are a resident. Tufts and Case are big $$ to go too. If you can't buy in Seattle, I don't know how you'd buy in Boston. The rest are a good, sort of wierd combo. You may consider Detroit if you want cheap housing.

Yeah, you know I've been hearing that about WVU, but 38% out of state for 2008 seems like pretty good odds, I may be wrong though, I'm not an expert. I know Boston will be expensive too but Washington wants research which I don't have. I really love that we can all help each other out like this. it helps to get info from others. I will definitely look into Detroit again. Thanks!

I happen to know quite a few dentist. Not relatives, just close friends of my family. Also, one is the dentist I went to Tijuana with and the other is the dentist I'm shadowing.

I used to live in Boston, you will not be able to buy there unless you have very deep pockets. As far as WVU goes, when I was in your boots I stumbled across statistics for last years cycle at WVU. I think they may be on the WVU website. The odds were horrible if you were out of state, and I have heard that you must have a WVU connection. Just trying to save you some money. A lot of people apply to these state schools where there is no chance. I had luck as an OOS applicant at Maryland and Buffalo this year, so they are definately OOS friendly.

Detroit has 33% out of state for 2008 and WVU has 38%. Were you suggesting Detroit just for cheap housing?

Good to know about Boston, buying a house wasn't the only reason I didn't choose WA though. My list isn't absolutely final though which is why I asked everyone what they thought, thanks for your good advice. I agree about Buffalo and Maryland, if I get a 20 or higher on my DAT I'll apply to Maryland! I doubt it though, we'll see!

I think this is also a little excessive since through ADSASS you can only submit four and many school require some from professors and are specific so I would look into that before getting three from dentists.

I didn't realize there was a limit to LOR! I'm learning so much. I'm new to this 😳

Yeah, WVU is really hard to get into without state ties OOS. Also, this year i think they were shooting for a higher percentage of instate students, so they probably want even less out of state students next year. I think more instate people have been applying recently.

This is all really great. I'm on the fence about Tennessee. If anyone knows some inside info about the school, let me know!

Really? Is that true? I guess i just thought the more the better? That's good to know though, thanks.

For this year's cycle there was a limit of four letters and the composite letter was counted as three. I would imagine that this coming up cycle will be the same.

WVU's class size is small (50), which makes it difficult for most OOS staters to get in unless a family member went there or they have extremely high stats. They get close to 3000 OOS apps and about 60-70 in state.
I go to Case for undergrad, and the cost of living there is actually less than living in WV. Plus, if you live close to the dental school you don't need a car. I am not a fan of Cleveland, but most people are not.

Tennessee takes mostly TN residents and a few Arkansas residents every year ( I think about 15-20) since AR doesn't have a dental school. Besides that, it's eh, okay.. the facilities need updating and they think they're really, really important (I believe the words "we're on par with [insert ivy league school here]..." were mentioned in my interview). They have a decent clinical program though.

Memphis is alright city, but one you exhaust Mud Island, Graceland and Beale Street there isn't much else. And you'll need security to walk you to your car if you stay at the school past dark, but that goes for a lot of places.

Good luck picking your schools!

I agree with this poster. Four was, and probably will be, the letter limit. However, this does not mean there is a limit on LORs. Rather, there is a limit to how many LORs you can send to schools via AADSAS.

Because of the requirements of the schools I applied to for the cycle that just closed, I had to have one LOR sent directly to a couple of my choices. The best thing to keep in mind is that each applicants AADSAS package is pretty substantial (~20 or more pages). Since it's getting tougher to get in, I'd try to make sure you have all your bases covered without becoming annoying by having several LORs that say basically the same thing. If they won't reveal something new and exciting about you, don't have them write a letter.

Your list of schools isn't too bad. Buffalo is clearly #1 on that list, and a great choice. It is hard to say if you are reaching too high or not reaching high enough without DAT scores though (save Buffalo of course). As for the letters, if the dentists know you then you don't need to spend more than 5 hours in their office shadowing them...I didn't to receive my letters. However, you may want to get some experience in a clinical setting as well as with specialists.
