I'm rotating through emergency med and need to do a short presentation (10-15 mins) at the end of my rotation. I was wondering if you have recommendations for interesting topics. Thanks!

Pick a patient that you had during your rotation. Do a case presentation, starting with "patient x presents to the ED with the chief complaint of," and then go through the workup. Don't give too much away-- keep them guessing! Go through your differential. And then, when you establish the diagnosis, go into more depth about that, as the meat of your presentation.

For example, I once heard a student do a lecture this way, and the patient ended up having thyroid storm. It was interesting to keep in mind the differential, and to have a real-life example of a patient presenting with this condition. For the crux of the presentation, she then went more into the key points about diagnosis and management, which is always useful.

I think it's a good way to organize a presentation-- it keeps people interested and guessing at first, it incorporates a real life situation you were in, and it highlights the workup of the condition you're presenting.

How about rectal foreign bodies?!

P.S. Fiera: what IS that on your avatar? (some dude reading a paper and....? i cant' make it out!)

Any other ideas? I'm basically looking for a topic that comes up often in EM, ideally something with some controversy/confusion/new guidelines that would be helpful to know more about. Thanks!
