confused on their solution, so i was hoping someone could clear things up.

How many gallons of pure orange pulp must be added to 30 gallons of a 20% solution of orange pulp to make it 50%?

the answer is 18 gallons

Since you started with 20% of gallons, 30 x 0.2 = 6 is the amount you have originally. And then, the question asks that they want to make it to 50%..
THis is like genchem problem where you have to dilute a solution.

So, let x is the amount you will add in order to make 50%.

(x+6)/(30+x) = 1/2 (50%)

if you solve for x: 30 + x = 12 + 2x, x = 18.
You need to put 18 gallons into the original(6gallon) in order for the solution to be 50%.
I think you need to think denominator as a whole solution. :)
