My school offers both part-time volunteer and full-time paid anesthesiology research positions over the summer. I really want to go into anesthesia, and haven't been able to find concrete information on how important research is. I intend to at least do part-time research, but am wondering if I need to do full-time research this summer to ensure I have a good chance of getting into anesthesia for residency.

If you're a US MD there no way you won't get into anesthesia unless you totally bomb step 1. Research is not crucial unless you want to go to the elite academic institutions.

Any other input would be greatly appreciated

What's keeping you from doing the full time anyway? Mo' money, mo' money. Haha.

But in all honesty, I'm sure the part time will be fine as long as you produce something in the end.

8-5 every day with a commute of an hour each way due to traffic is extremely low on the list of ways I would like to spend my summer lol

Anesthesia pays pretty well and supposedly has a decent lifestyle, so why is it not more competitive?

Encroachment by mid-level providers, i.e. CRNA. Not a problem of just anaesthesia; there is also encroachment by NPs in primary care.
