Hello all!

I am trying to decide between UCD and OSU! I feel very lucky that I have such great schools to chose between, but I am super torn! I am currently interested in shelter med, but also enjoy public health, research, and could see myself in a speciality.

tOSU: I already go to tOSU for undergrad and LOVE being a buckeye. OSU truly is my happy place and I love Columbus! I also work in a research lab at the vet school I really enjoy and feel very supported in. I have had great experiences shadowing at the school and have learned that the professors are super nice and supportive to the students which is a huge plus. I also like the idea of pass fail classes (because I know letter grades will stress me out!) I am, however not as big of a fan of how the curriculum is set up and the “flipped classroom”.

UC Davis: I am a fan of how UC Davis has classes in “blocks” by system, which I like better than how OSU has “blocks” grouped by body area. I also really like the idea of having a homeroom and having a “stream”, as I have gotten large animal experience and realized small animal is for me. I don’t like having letter grades, and I just really don’t know much about the school so would love some more information. I also would miss being in a big city.

UC Davis is about 25K cheaper than OSU. All though, I have not yet received financial aid from either (I do not think I got any additionally scholarship at Davis besides the ones every student gets and I have no idea about OSU).

Are you looking at tuition alone? I'd highly recommend that you account for cost of living, which is markedly higher in California. VIN estimates that your cost of attendance is about $23K lower to attend tOSU for 4 years. If you look at tuition by itself, yes, Davis comes out marginally lower, but that's not accounting for everything.

Especially in these economic times, I recommend going to the least expensive option.

Thank you for the help!

I made a spreadsheet factoring in both cost of living and tuition and Davis came out cheaper. I used the 5% tuition increase numbers OSU gave us at admitted students day and factored in an around 8000 dollar yearly grant from UC Davis to get the price I got. (However I did use the 24-25 Davis cost as the 25-26 wasn't available yet).

It's a no brainer. Davis has the first and most robust shelter medicine program in the country and is the only school with a boarded shelter specialist on staff (DAVBP- Shelter Medicine). Have you looked up the UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program? Plus shelter vets don't make very much money so it's lower tuition will help too.

Ohio State also has a boarded shelter specialist on staff- Dr Jeannette O Quinn. She was one of the founders/developers of the shelter medicine specialty.

Idk if I would say it's the 'most robust', partially because it doesn't matter but also partially because I'm not sure how true that is  UF has at least one boarded shelter med vet and a very 'robust' and popular shelter med program, including multiple training opportunities for students and post-grads. They even had one of the very few residencies at one point, not sure if they still do it. U of I also has a pretty big shelter med program, although I don't believe they have a boarded specialist at this time. Multiple other schools have a big enough shelter med program to sustain a specialty intern.

Pick the cheapest school, considering cost of living and travel/flights over the four years. You don't need to go to a specific school that is 'known for' something in order to succeed in any specialty/niche in vet med.
