I've been accepted to Touro California and am still waiting to hear back from Touro NY (Harlem). Touro CA only gives 2 weeks to pay the deposit, so I'd like to have made my decision before I hear back from Touro NY. I'm leaning toward Touro CA at this point, although my parents are leaning toward NYC since it's closer to home and I won't need to have a car.

Here are some of the pros/cons I see for each school.

Touro California
Pros:
  • Consistently strong record of CA residency matches
  • Relative proximity to SF and Silicon Valley (I have a tech background and want to get involved in healthcare technology/consulting later on)
  • Has an actual campus with >1 bulding
  • Suburban setting is ideal for distraction-free studying
  • Reasonable cost of living in the Vallejo / Mare Island area
  • More established / 10 years older than Touro NY
  • Northern California weather!
Cons:
  • Heard bad things about rotations on SDN, but when I interviewed there and talked to students/staff the situation seems to have been mostly resolved
  • Need a car for shopping
  • Vallejo is below average in most respects compared to other California cities
  • In the event you want to do a non-primary-care specialty, this may not be the best place
Touro New York - Harlem
Pros:
  • Big city lifestyle - more food options, shopping, entertainment etc.
  • Strong residency matches, especially in the NYC/tri-state area
  • Rotations are decent overall
  • Don't need a car
Cons:
  • Harlem isn't exactly the safest/greatest part of NYC/Manhattan
  • High cost of living
  • Campus is pretty much just one building
  • Northeast weather
  • NYC and everything going on within it = many study distractions
  • No rotations in Manhattan (yet)
Anything else I should be considering?

I don't really have an opinion except to say that there is absolutely no reason you would have to live in Harlem if you went to Touro NY or spend anytime there aside from the 1 block walk from the subway to class. Also, 125th may be a culture shock to some but I don't think the average new yorker has any reason to feel unsafe there.

Bump thread.

I have paid my deposit at Touro-NY and I received an interview at Touro-ca. Wondering if I should go.

I'm wondering about curriculum difference, class size, rotations, and match results etc.

I'm attending Touro CA next year. I canceled my Touro NY interview shortly after my acceptance. I think it needs to come down to one thing; where do you want to live/work. I think tuition wise, they are similar. Housing costs are pretty similar bay area vs. greater manhatten. Neither is going to give you a real advantage over the other in terms of residency placement. Just go for where you want to live and forget about it.

For me, I'm from Socal and would like to return after school, so Touro CA made sense. That, and the thought of spending 4 years surrounded by neurotic, high-stress New Yorkers/east coasters was too much to bear.

I'm impartial to location and would prefer cali weather, but I seem to come across a lot of negative reviews on both schools.

People mention Touro NY having a bad teaching/attendance style for the first two years and Touro CA having problems with rotations.
