Hello. I am trying to decide between these two schools. I previously posted in "Help Me Decide" but did not receive much feedback. Therefore, I decided to post here.

TOURO CA PRO:
- proximity to support system
- more opportunities for research
- more applicants match within CA

TOURO CA CON:
- outdated facilities
- higher cost of living
- surrounding area (Vallejo)

TOURO NV PRO:
- newer facilities
- lower cost of living
- board-focused curriculum
- surrounding area (Henderson)

TOURO NV CON:
- distance from support system
- fewer opportunities for research
- fewer applicants match within CA

SIMILAR:
- grading
- class size
- cost of attendance

INDETERMINATE:
- quality of rotations

SUMMARY: I liked the atmosphere and location of TOURO NV slightly better, but I think TOURO CA is the more logical choice since I want to obtain a residency in California. Any insights or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The fact that more graduates from Touro CA obtain California residencies may just be a consequence of the fact that half of its students are from California (and that most of these students, I assume, want to stay in California). The student body at Touro NV, on the other hand, is probably geographically diverse, so a smaller proportion of the class seeks residencies in California in the first place.

According to past match lists, a non-insignificant number of Touro NV graduates (~10%) enter California residencies every year, including residencies in competitive specialties (e.g., orthopedic surgery). Furthermore, the California residencies that these students enter are, on average, in the same tier as the residencies that Touro NV graduates choose in other states. This indicates that the lower CA match rate for Touro NV is very likely due to a lack of student interest in that region, not due to an institutional disadvantage.

If you prefer the environment and facilities of Touro NV, then you should go there. You'll have a better quality of life during your four years of medical school, and you'll still be able to get into a California residency.

Good luck with your decision.

This is easy.

Which do you like more:
Napa wines and SF seafood or buffet at the casinos?

I've only heard terrible things from Touro-CA students, including the amount of dedicated board prep time. This idea of "research opportunities" is a non-factor. I don't know a single student that ever did research during the school year, and besides, nobody from Touro-CA will have the time to drive to Berkeley or UCSF on top of the curriculum. Besides, this isn't undergrad anymore where you need to do that.

I appreciate the input. Thank you all for your help!
