Touro-CA vs Western-CA

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
One of the few spots in CA that keeps DO dreams alive for specializing. G-D bless them, loll.

Yeah, but I think it's false advertising to say that TUCOM students rotate at UCSF when it's Fresno. It's a community hospital that has a loose affiliation with UCSF and is nowhere near the caliber of UCSF main.

Agreed. By this logic Western rotates at UCLA because you can do psych at the olive view branch 3rd year.

Have to disagree with you here. UCSF Fresno is split between two of the biggest hospitals in Fresno and they see a crap ton of patients. With about a million in the metro area there's plenty of pathology to be seen!

Also not defending touro at all lol

It is UCSF though, it's not false advertising. The name is literally called UCSF Fresno.

It really isn't though. There are a lot of community places that have X big Name medical school in the name that really only have a very very distant connection to that school. Another example is Yale. There are a large number of programs that have the name "Yale" in them that really have almost nothing to do with the school. The affiliation is very loose and is not the same as UCSF, not even close actually. @AlteredScale help me out describing this phenomena.

Oh I agree, I'm not saying it's a bad place to train I'm just saying it is false advertising by saying "TUCOM students rotate at UCSF" when they really don't. Rotating in those big hospitals while in San Diego would be sweet.

@AnatomyGrey12 is correct. The caliber of UCSF Fresno is strong, but not close to UCSF.

The difference in fellowship match rate, mentorship, research opportunities, and educational opportunities between UCSF and UCSF-Fresno is very very big. Sure, you are UCSF and yes, they work you hard (because you are at a mothership hospital for Fresno). But the resident at the UCSF applying GI who worked and did research with leaders in the GI field, networked with their GI dept (which is much larger than UCSF Fresno) will have an overall stronger academic profile than that of someone from UCSF Fresno doing the same thing. Same goes for a place like NorthShore Health System that is affiliated with UChicago (in which schools almost always have a mishap every year of listing it on their match list as (University of Chicago Medical Center).

I like WesternU so I would suggest it over Touro-CA. This is more based on personal experience with WesternU grads and I also have a close friend who goes there who likes his experience out there!
Pomona may not be the mecca of culture that some urbanites may specifically want but it is relatively close to really great places and food!!--plus L.A is close enough for those who want that experience.

Do D.O. students who aren't also doing a Ph.D. do research during summers? If so, is Touro or Western U better for research?

What are some of your reservations? (I am applying next cycle, I live about ~10 minutes away from the campus and I know a lot of graduates in the area.. so I'm definitely going to apply). They have a lot of premed events there but I haven't had the time to visit yet.

We are probably neighbors! I'm in chino hills hahaha! Let me know if you want to go to a visit together

Every year at the AOA conventions, Touro-CA has more posters than all the other schools combined. So my school gets lost in the crowd. Annoys my dDan to no end.

Thanks, Goro!

Another question: does the outlook for competitive residencies post-merger differ by whether the school is for-profit or non-profit, or by school brand recognition? I know basically no one knows how things will be post-merger, but just curious whether there's guesses re: the importance of these factors.

We have no idea. The business of profit vs nonprofit will be irrelevant, though.

Branding counts for something. But there's still an uphill battle for people to break the mindset of PDS who lump all DOs together.

For your sake, pick Western. Vallejo is a terrible city with high crime rate, and you must most likely shell out 5$ each time to cross the bridge to get there. And the campus is a refurbished army base with a laughable gym

I would live in Oakland, not Vallejo. I grew up in the Bay Area and find Mare Island lovely. Crime doesn't worry me--I want to work in underserved areas and welcome the opportunity to learn more about and integrate into the communities I want to serve.
