What do you guys think of Touro CA, where does it rank in comparison to other DOs???

What bout socially? Is it in a social city????

Any info would help

Touro is an old military base turned medical school.
that being said, its not the prettiest campus.
its jewish too, when i visited i saw lots of jews walking around...and the library has a star of david flag in it. but i dont think that makes any difference to anyone who studies or teaches there.

as far as the things ive heard about Touro in mare island are that the doctors who come out of there are more often than not--better than a majority of MDs....ie, their clinical skills and interpersonal relations are much more suitable to the profession of medicine. *this hear-se comes from nurses and other hospital employees i associate with.

thanks... great response!

oh--and just in case there may have been a chance where my post gave off a negative impression...id like it to be known that im considering applying to this school for the DO program.
btw they also have pharmacy, public health, teaching and various other programs.

i just had the orientation for the public health pgm. The campus is small (plans to expand) and is a work in progress (the classrooms & labs are very well equipped). The instructors, faculty, & students are all very personable. The majority of students & faculty are not jewish, but the school has to adhere to jewish principles which means kosher food sold there, limited school hours on fridays, and extra holidays off 🙂 There's not much nightlife in vallejo, but san fran is very close & there's even a ferry that takes you to pier 41.

Hahahah ... Okay I know you were not trying to be offensive or anything in your post but for some reason the wording of this line made my laugh. Anyway, with that said: I have heard a lot of bagging on the actual campus itself, but I have heard the education is top notch (check out the match lists too), and I know they just opened a huge cancer research center which speaks volumes about the school's dedication to the field of medicine.

Irongirl have you done an ironman?

If so ... I hope they used an Iron condom. The last thing this world needs is a bunch of damn Iron kids running around without their Iron parents. (I don't know what is with me and the one liners in this thread, but I find them funny)😀

I know of Iron butterfly and Iron maiden

If I can find a way to still race at all when I'm in med school, I will be freaking ecstatic. Tri training takes up so much time though.

California would be a nice place to get fast on the bike though.

Does anyone know where the majority of students rotate for years 3 and 4? Do they stay local or is a significant amount of traveling involved?

Thanks!!!

I met a resident from Touro Cali who graduated 2 years ago. He told me that most students have to travel quite a bit during the 3/4th yr rotations since UCSF/Stanford has most of the spots.

Touro's Anatomy professor holds group cycling rides every month or so! and quite a few med students are in on that...
i am definitely going to try and race while im in med school...i dont plan on doing IronMan events though. I might do a half...but itd be more optimal to hover around the olympic distance events.

That's pretty sweet. At my size (6'4" 230), I need to really keep on top of my training if I want to do anything long. But I would totally be in on group rides led by a prof. I would also probably try to lead some group rides myself once I learn my way around. I do some of that here in the ATX already.

Apparently this post has turned into the multisport thread, but, so be it... I have a few friends going to Nova in FL and they still compete at least a few times a year in mid-distance races: 70.3 and olympic. I just did the vineman 70.3 in July in Sonoma and stopped by the campus to look around... military base... not too bad. I figure what goes on inside is more important than the outside appearance anyway, and the HUGE grant for the new cancer reseach facility sounds promising. Just my $0.02

I recall at DMU or one of the midwest schools that still did triathalons. He was supposedly pretty good too.

Any triathletes who end up at a California school: don't miss the Wildflower. This was the highlight of my undergrad career. They have olympic, off-road and half-ironman.

It's on the central coast, so about a 3-4 hour drive from Vallejo or Pomona. It's de rigeur to camp instead of staying at a hotel, but you'll want to find out where the Cal Poly ski club partiers are going and go the other way. Those partiers will be your hungover volunteers giving you gatorade the next day - say thank you VERY LOUD.

this is one of the main reasons i decided not to go to touro. there are some good rotation sites in the city, but whether or not u get those rotations sites depends on a lottery. however, i do not actually know how many spots are available vs how many students actually want to to go these sites. i voluteered at doctors medical center in san pablo where many touro stundets rotate. it is not a huge academic hospotal if that is what u are after. not much variety coming in at the ED.

i was also afraid of the alternative sites, should the lottery not be kind to u. now this is all hearsay but i asked around a lot to get good feel of where i might end up, but there are sites out in bakersfield and rotations where it is more one on one toime with your preceptor. of course, if u want that kind of experience, that will suit u well. however if u have to be in a huge academic hospital environment your 3rd year, touro might not be a good idea. yes, u will have to travel.

more importantly, there are no DO residency spots in northern california. bay rea is beautiful and diverse, but i think thats the biggest draw to attending touro. u will get a fine education i am sure, but i think it might not be the best place to be if u feel like u want a school with strong connections to large academic hospitals.

Wow, thanks!! That was exactly the kind of info I was looking for. 👍

Thanks for the info...bummer about the glbt community. At least they reversed the decision quickly.

The irony is that (being in the Bay Area) Touro-Ca has one of the largest, most vocal and most active LGBT communities of any med school I've seen. (U Michigan is probably #1). The community came together and let the admin know this wouldn't fly and they changed it really fast. The faculty gave their full support. In the end, in sort of brought everyone together actually.

Holy crap, they're advertising Accelerade on this site. That stuff is the brainchild of John Ivy, my old professor, and chairman of the UT Kinesiology department.

He probably knows more about the GLUT4 transporter than everyone else on this planet put together and multiplied by 1000.
