Touro Nevada's dermatology program is being phased out.

Does anyone know why programs get phased out? Any idea on why Touro's program in specific is getting phased out?

They are phasing out the derm program to make way to open a new Pulm fellowship and other possible fellowships. The pulm fellowship is supposed to open this upcoming yr while GI or cards are in the works/proposal. This is the last yr they are accepting ppl for derm.

Yeah, I saw this last year and asked in the 09/10 TU-NV thread - which led to the Pulm explanation. Frankly, I don't understand closing one program to open another, but it seemed like a good residency so maybe it will open back again in some other form err something??

Thanks for the response. The pulm fellowship seems to be in effect already.

I was able to speak with an upper classman as well and they told me it was a business move. The derm program was not making enough money for the hospital so they decided to phase it out. The new CEO apparently has more of a business interest than an academic interest in Valley hospital. That's too bad...

I've actually heard it's hard to open/keep derm residencies open for this very reason. Apparently, derm just doesn't bring the hospital the kind of funding compared to something like Ortho (for example), so it probably did end up being a business decision. Too bad though.
