I’m having trouble deciding which school I should attend. I was impressed with ICOM, but it being a new school worries me when it comes to picking a residency. Which would be better if I wanted a chance at a specialty like neurology?

ICOM is pretty new, so you'd have to take out private loans instead of federal loans. That alone would make me attend Touro over ICOM without getting into all the other reasons.

I don’t know that to be true, I was the second class at my school and both myself and the class ahead of us got fafsa loans. Do you have specific knowledge about icom?

Yeah, my school is also a new school but we do have fafsa, but other new schools don't have fafsa until they graduate a class. I think it has something to do with being a for-profit vs a non-profit school. My school is currently the only new school that offers fafsa. Also the only non-profit new school.

This is what ICOM fafsa page says: FA-Apply — Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine

This is the correct info. Due to For-profit status ICOM is not eligible to apply for federal loan eligibility until September 2020, which means no federal loans until Fall of 2021 most likely. They said during my interview that they would potentially offer retroactive federal aid for 2020 school year but this was not a guarantee. They basically can't get a school code for FAFSA until they go through this process. So assuming everything goes right the incoming class would be 1-2 years 100% private loans and 2-3 years with federal loan assistance. I sure did love ICOM though and think they will produce quality physicians.

All good points, but what quality of education/residency match?
No one will know what will happen to ICOM until they actually go through the match, so that's an unknown. Touro already have a reputation, and residencies that have matched students from Touro will likely match other students in the future because they already know what kind of students Touro produces. Quality of education might be the same, but you gotta consider the unknowns that will be associated with being from a new school. But whichever school you go to, in the end, everything will come down to how much effort you put in. If you wanna match something competitive, then you gotta make damn sure you have the board scores (USMLE and COMLEX), the appropriate research/pubs, no red flags, good grades/class rank, and great letters of recommendation for that specialty.

Last day to decide. Still not that sure on either one. Exam schedule for touro NY is terrible but the constant relocation for ICOM is a drawback. Also worried I'll be stuck in that region for residency.
