Hello everyone!
I was recently accepted to both Touro and NYU and unsure which to choose. I live in NY and Touro would be a short commute everyday from my house (20 min) so I would be able to save on housing by living with my parents. On the other hand, I would have to live in Manhattan for NYU, so it would end up costing me over 200K more to attend.

Which would you choose?
Touro ~270K
NYU ~ 475K

My take on this.

Touro is a new school and does not have a graduating class thus there is some uncertainty. However the amount of investment I saw them putting into their buildings have wowed me. From my interview there, it is without a doubt they are there to succeed. They will have their clinics done by next year with a pretty large patient pool as well.
The building they have even has a gym inside for dental students and the medical building is open to the dental students to use.

NYU on the other hand is more reputable with a large network of alumni and administration. They are a great school that has a long history of creating strong clinicians. My mentor graduated from there and is one of the best dentists I have met. The patient pool despite sharing with Columbia is probably the largest outside of the Cali schools.

The million dollar question however (or 200k question) is, is it worth 200k extra? Going to either school, you will come out a dentist and the same piece of paper. What you do with that paper is all up to you. To me it is NOT worth the extra 200k.

Dude, Touro isn't even accredited yet... I'd play it safe and go to NYU. Also, why would anyone want to go to Touro unless they didn't get in anywhere else?

Correct touro isn't accredited yet, but you're not in the first class so you will be ok if for some reason they fail accreditation. they have a chance to correct everything so that the second class will have accreditation.
so if u dont mind going to a school without a reputation thats cheaper touro. if you want the name nyu.

Wait how much cheaper is Touro? I was under the impression that since it's a private school and also located in NY, that the difference between them and NYU is pretty much negligible. So you'd still be bled dry but without the name/security that NYU would otherwise provide you.

It's ~380k at Touro and NYU is around 480-500k lol

Bump since a friend of mine is also considering Touro: what if Touro end up not getting accredited on time for your class? Then you're screwed. If I were you I would choose NYU (or any other dental school, no matter how expensive) in a heartbeat. That's what I told my friend.

They passed initial accreditation. all they need is a graduating class now. UNE is also not fully accredited and people are still applying by the boatloads and don't bring this accreditation crap as much. Your friend shouldn't not attend Touro because a few SDN hotheads make up excuses left and right.

Copying and pasting my post once more 😛 (again this is just my opinion)

Plenty of people at my interview this year had very high gpas and dat scores and were intent on attending Touro. It has everything NYU has to offer plus more (at least in my opinion). Short train ride into the city. Cheaper tuition. Cheaper cost of living. Smaller class size. A distinguished faculty. NY Med also has an incredible reputation. Sure it's a new dental school, but the people leading it know what they're doing. If you ever have the luxury of speaking with those people, you'll understand that 🙂

Touro also has connections to several residency programs. https://www.nymc.edu/departments/ac...-medicine/dental-medicine/residency-programs/

I actually turned down NYU for Touro. When I informed NYU that I was turning them down, they asked what other school I planned on attending which I thought was interesting.

Also in terms of the "name", I've found that there are plenty of dental schools that current professionals have never heard of. And that's completely fine! They're still great schools. So many people still apply to them. However, generally speaking when you mention "NY Med" amongst the medical community you get the "oh wow". (Of course NYU is recognized as well!)

I'm also personally not much of a city gal unless it's just to go in for a day to see a show 😛 My roommate from undergrad DREAMED of living in the city. Many do. Now that she currently is living there, she says her dream of living in the city was overrated based on how crazy expensive everything is.

NYU
but I am always biased toward NYU.
You are young, you should enjoy your life in an awesome place while you are young. ( even if you are not young, you should still live in a nice place)
(But if suburban is your idea of nice place, don't choose NYU)
Plus, both places are in New York, so you'll see your parents every week without being too dependant on them.

Touro is still somewhat expensive.
