Is anyone in or considering the Towson University postbac? I am thinking about either doing this or just going the informal route and taking classes at UMBC.

I've considered Towson, and I spoke with their admissions counselor, too. What he said (if you can take the word of someone like him) is that the professors are better there than at neighboring schools that focus on research like Johns Hopkins. I haven't been to maryland, but baltimore is supposed to suck. Do you know the area well, because I'm considering Towson, too, and it would depend on how nice of a place it is too live.

I went to the Towson program in 2001-2003 and I felt it was excellent. The admissions people at UMd (where I attend now) regard it very highly. Feel free to pm me with any questions.

CycleCA, I'm originally from the Baltimore suburbs. Baltimore is not the greatest, but there are some little pockets of fun places (Fells Point, for example). Also you can make day trips to places like Annapolis and DC.

PhD student of UMB here. What program are you guys talking about. Towson doesn't appear to have anything specifically geared for pre-med study.

I am currently doing an informal post bac here at Towson. I am enjoying it very much but it is definitely getting pretty intense. I am friends with all of the formal post-baccers and we have a tight-knit group. I have a friend who got into the Bryn-mawr program and decided to take chem 1 and 2 at UMBC over the summer. He said it was awful because the exams were multiple choice, and ridiculous.

I did not get into the program at Towson bc I had a 3.0 gpa and a C in calculus, and had to retake accounting during my undergrad.

Hey, I'm a current undergrad at UMBC and know a lot about the science profs and classes-so if you have any questions, I can answer those. I was looking at the Towson program too, but Goucher seems to be better (however,a lot more competitive to get into!)

Im hoping to take my pre-reqs at UMBC after graduation from my nursing program. Are the sciences really "ridiculous" there? Does anyone have suggestions for a good Baltimore university (I think Hopkins could be a bit too intense as Im also hoping to work at the same time). Thanks

The sciences at UMBC are notoriously hard. It's a big science research university and the professors definitely expect a lot. Class averages tend to be very low and if there's a curve, it's a bell curve (which doesn't help a lot of people). However, if you succeed at UMBC, you're golden for med school. I have a couple of friends that came to take a micro course at UMBC and they said they thought Hopkins was easier. Go figure!
