I'm in the midst of third year and unfortunately I'm stuck in the track with a few annoying gunner types. Any words of encouragement.

hahaha......i'm a fourth year now but my third year track had 9 people. 5 of them (yep more than half) were AOA. How's that for a gunner track?

I'm so busy on my feet I can't tell who are gunners. Hey people, just out of curiousity, what do gunners act like on the wards or how do you spot them?

If you can't spot the gunner in the first five minutes, you ARE the gunner!

Its very simple to spot the gunner. I like to use this test. Wait for the resident to ask medical student which one of them wants to do a digital rectal exam? The first person to answer "yes" is usually your gunner. As an aside, they are usually way too happy to be doing a digital rectal exam

Ignore the gunners and just concentrate on doing the best that you can do. It's not like the residents and attendings didn't go to medical school at one time and know all about thes obnoxious types!

Are gunners always at the top of their class? Meaning can one be a gunner but just not be that bright? Isn't it more of a personality and state of mind more than a grade.

Gunners aren't just smart people, they're smart people who demonstrate it in an obnoxious manner - for instance, like the student who was on with me who would pimp me and the other medical students whenever the attending was around. My encouraging words - gunners will always get what they deserve. Which sadly many times is a derm residency, but sometimes it's a gas tank full of sugar if you get off your ass...

Rotations are like class rank. There's always a first, and there's always a last. Therefore, everything in the middle is the usual.

Yes, there are people who make rotations and life difficult. But before you go labeling everyone who does better than you a gunner, always remember to ask yourself if you're the slacker. Someone rounding on your patients at 3 am to look great? versus someone rounding on your patients because you didn't want to get there at 5am. Your residents notice this.

AOA is not the same as a "gunner."

The gunner is the one who asks the "fascinating" obscure questions to the attending, and butters up anyone in a position of power on every rotation. Gunners have literature references at the bottom of their H&P's. Gunners pretend to be team players, but really are not because all they want is to do better than you and get honors. Gunners don't have many friends at the end of third year.

Drexel University College of Medicine in the tradition of MCP/Hahnemann - "Still the medical school with the longest ...name"

I think this is longer:
College of Medicine of the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn.

Af Peds boy that is a gunner. I had a Gunner 3rd yr who pimped myself and one other 3rd year in front of the residence and the attending on something she had learned the day before we started and one resident called her on it. It F'in' awsome! 🙂
