What are some of the traits and characteristics that program directors usually look for in residency applicants?

You like reading the literature
OK spending after hours going over cases, doing prep work for the following day
taking a leadership role and helping to organize didactic sessions for the residents
showing initiative to work on some upper level cases. you know, that luke skywalker jedi ****.
Reading up on a case well in advance and being prepared to answer most questions thrown your way about that case
of course, being a team player. helping out some of the weaker residents to make sure everyone is up to speed
taking good care of your patients and following up on them religiously postop

just to name a few. not sure which residency is in question. I was an OS resident. but this applies to alot of the different specialties

Ask non-stop questions, be crazy cheery on Monday mornings, run around pretending like you have a ton of free time to exercise and do random non-resident stuff, become a powerpoint ranger and then pretend like your powerpoint is "crappy"..

Sorry, sarcasm.

Be humble, try to learn as much as you can, expect to have tough days (and learn how to cope with these days like a professional), engage in questions after attempting to look it up yourself, be very familiar with your cases and be ready to answer any question a mentor might have about what you are about to do.

Be interested, even in the boring stuff.
Do procedures. Dentistry is rarely about talking
Work together with attendings, fellow residents, assistants, nurses, front line.
When not busy, help out those who are.
Don't watch the clock.
Be prepared for todays work and tomorrows.
