Hey guys,

I have somewhat of a debacle. I just submitted my amcas. However, I have not submitted the transcript request to my school. Reason being: I need a grade change... a major one.

I took an independent research study course a couple years back and was unable to complete it due to some extenuating circumstances. The grade given was an F, but the professor said he would change it when I was able to complete the work. After some back and forth with the professor being on hiatus, and my studying abroad, I finally completed the work a few weeks ago. However, it will take the professor a couple more weeks to look through everything and submit the grade change. On the amcas, I wrote the grade as F and marked it as deferred. Now I have two options:

1.) Wait until the grade change, then submit transcript request, and the aamc will change to correct grade. However, that might not happen until late July, meaning I would be pretty late on secondaries.

2.) Submit transcript request. Have aaamc likely process the grade as F. Then in late july, with grade change, have another transcript sent to aamc with all that academic change request stuff.

I am leaning heavily towards the second option so that schools get my information early, and that by the time I submit secondaries, hopefully they will already have the grade change. The course is a non-science, but it affects my cumulative gpa by .1 (3.66 --> 3.56).

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I was actually in a similar predicament. I took an independent readings course that I received an I in because my "mentor" bailed on me and didn't report a grade. I waited until the grade got changed. Personally, I wouldn't want an I (or an F for that matter) on my transcript no matter what. I'd wait.

thanks for the suggestion. can anyone maybe comment on the timing process? as in, how bad of a situation am i in if i wait? my mcat is just on the median for the schools to which i am applying, so i feel like i really need to turn in an early app.

also, if i still go with the second option, and have the grade change done by the time i submit secondaries, will schools even see the F?

Well, to be honest you're already getting in somewhat late. You probably won't be verified until mid-July at the earliest if you were to submit today, and there will be some people that have already submitted secondaries at that point. You're not screwed by any means, but you'll be late by SDN standards.

Yes, schools will see the F because that's what's put in the primary. Your transcript is part of your primary, not your secondary. You can change the form with AMCAS, but if the school has already downloaded and printed your app, they won't print another copy. You could always send an update letter and explain what happened if you wanted to go that route.
